Thinking of starting Sulawesi Shrimp tank again after been away for so long.
The last time I had my tank, the shrimps hardly make it through 3 months.
Just like to check, what will be the best substrate for the Sulawesi Shrimps?

Try Sulawesi sand. The contrast will make the shrimps stand out. The shop in tampines seems to have better stuff for Sulawesi shrimps.

How I did it before (with a little little bit of success), just sand and some Sulawesi rocks, cycle for three weeks and no fan.
Temp and ph should be higher as compared to crs.

That's what was taught to me.

There are a few success keeping and breeding of sulawesi shrimps here. The main reason of success is the use of sulawesi minerals from salty shrimp, these salt can be bought from mainly from green chapter. However you need to use RO water or distilled water with the salts, substrate is best to used those inert type as the salts are able to buff the water. Along with Sulawesi rocks, the condition is almost close to the natural habitat. However, the maintenance of the tank is not easy unless you have your own RO unit. Many plants unable to survive in high ph water too.

The salty shrimp salts have had good reviews.
I have the Sulawesi 8.5 & it really is able to achieve the parameters stated on the packaging. This one is slightly troublesome as it needs to be dissolved with CO2.
There is a Sulawesi 7.5 which does not need CO2 to dissolve. Probably good enough for cardinal shrimps.

With salty shrimp salts, its suggested to use inert/cosmetic substrate (i.e. not coral chips or coral sand).
    I personally like this range : http://www.adana.co.jp/en/products/n...te/color_sand/

Many folks are put off by the investment & 'complications' of a RO/DI system. Some key points.
    - A typical RO/DI system purchased locally starts from about $200-$250. RO/DI systems will give you 0 TDS.
    - Some folks opt for a DI system (without the reverse osmosis filter). Its about $100. DI systems will give 2-5 TDS. http://www.madpetz.com.sg//index.php...products_id=95
    - Filter & resin replacement costs can be seen here. http://www.madpetz.com.sg//index.php...ndex&cPath=1_7
    - Minimum pressure to operate an RO/DI system is about 35psi. This is a typical water pressure in high rise apartments. At these pressures, RO/DI systems will reject about 4 parts of water for every 1 part of pure water. And at these pressures, it may take 45min to obtain 10L of pure water.
    - If the water pressure is too low, you'll need to invest in a booster pump (~ $200) to bring the water pressure up to 80-100psi

BTW, I hear MadPetz is having a discount on their DI systems this week. Call to enquire.

Re: Substrate for Sulawesi Shrimp Tank

I have had success breeding cardinals using the salty shrimp 7.5. And i believe the substrate should be inert so as not to alter the water parameters, so a definite no to coral sand since it would increase the TDS in an uncontrollable manner.
Anyway how big is your setup? If it is not that big i suggest you can just use bottled DI water from NTUC, NTUC pure drinking water, that is what I'm doing for my setup. You dont need to do any water change anyway so it would not be expensive to maintain, only the occasional water top up due to evaporation.
