has any one used bio mat before?

You mean those green tough Japanese bio mat?
I am using them for a long time in my overhead filter and stackable filter. Good and cheap, and they don't disintegrate.

They are not useful as mechanical filter, but more useful as bio filter. I usually places the white foam mat and the blue mat first as mechanical filter, and leave the green Jap mat at the bottom.
After the Green Jap mat, you can place ceramic rings or biohome at the bottom.

Not sure if it's the same , I saw those mat where put on the bottom of the tank

Those mats are good as surfaces for beneficial bacteria to grow on and they allow for ample circulation, hence more for biological filtration (as what Seth mentioned).

Some people also lay it on the bottoms of tanks to simulate a sort of artificial substrate, it helps to create additional surfaces for beneficial bacteria to grow on, especially in tanks with minimal filtration. Some breeders also use it to trap eggs laid by fishes too, helps keep the eggs safe from being eaten by the adult fishes.

I have seen this type of in the tank mat in some fish stores. Now I know what they are for.. thanks
