Just renovated the discus tank again, and this time, removed all the substrate where the discuses like to hang out. It is going to be even easier to vacuum away waste. Some of the gravel are turning a dirty yellow and green due to algae growth. Removed those as well and topped up with some new white gravel.
Cories are still able to forage in areas where there are gravel. I think this is as good as it gets for me short of going barebottom tank.

can I ask what is the dimension of your tank? I have a 3x1x1 and was thinking of doing a discuss tank, but read somewhere that size is too low for discuss, and so am reconsidering....until I saw yours....![]()
Thanks. It just a simple setup
My tank is 4 x 1.5 x 1.5. The tank do look short because some of the fishes are approaching 6inches plus tall. So if you have a 1 feet tall tank, you can try to picture what they will look like. Ideally, 2 feet tall is better. Discus are jumper too, and needs to be house with 6 or more together.

Very nice, bro. I remember you have an earlier topic about the light for your discus tank. What is the combination of light you used for your current tank? And do you use the HOF for your tank? Can you share the media and flow rate of the pump? Thank you very much.
To take photos, i usually switch on all 4 T5 lights, which comprises 2 whites, and 1 actinic blue and 1 pink light. Otherwise, i alternate between the white + blue or white + pink for daily lighting.
Yes, i do use 2 hang on filters, and 1 overhead filter. The hang on filters have a capacity of 800 litres per hour each, the overhead pump about double that, giving me a total filtration of about 3200 litre per hour. These hang on filters are very useful, they can be deployed to another tank if i need to transfer fishes, and they also break the surface of the water, giving much oxygen to the fishes.
The flowrate is way too strong for discuses, so they are grown from young to get used to it. They are all commandos by now.
I use very simple medium. Large ceramic rings at the base, followed by green japanese mat, then blue sponge and then 2 layers of disposable white sponge, which i change quarterly. The filters also have sponge as pre-filters, which i wash weekly.

Thank you bro for your information. I think the light for your tank is not an issue, since you are using most of low light required plants (anubias, fern ...). But I do see there is algae development in the right bottom of your tank, and I concern about your white gravel will be dirty very soon. Can you share more on the diet of your discus?
Yeah, there are some green algae which i usually leave the otos and sae to graze on. Not too averse to algae, as they give an aged look. The white gravel usually turn a shade darker after months, and i usually replace the top layer if they get too dark looking.
The discus only eats ordinary beefheart without additives (from Chai), but they do snack on cory sinking tablets and are treated hikari frozen bloodworm on rare occasion.

An update on the inhabitants:
Here's the most hardworking inhabitant of the tank, the 6 SAEs that alway swim together to clear algae.
Turqs from Chai
Pigeon from neighbourhood shop:
My favorite yellow, king of the tank, and the biggest fish, from a neighbourhood shop

My pigeon got adopted by a nice bro, so I have space to grow out these 3 inches red marlboros which i bought from Y618. Hope they grow out well and they are happily eating beefheart in a 2 ft grow out bare tank.
I find red marlboro really pretty, a throw back to original discus colours and yet retain such nice striatiations

The little discus have all grown to sub-adults, and 2 blue diamonds have found home, which also help reduce the bioload.
The tank got simplified yet again, and a pot of crypt bonsai got removed. Spacing between the driftwood is increased to allow the discus to swim through them easily.
Here's couple of images.
