What shrimps are you intending to keep
Good day to bros & sis,
Quite interested to have a new shrimp set-up. Came across fluval spec V (5gallon,19litres) tank recently. Was wondering if the stock product of this tank can support my shrimp needs.
Main concern probably include the filter intake. Was reading some overseas review on this tank and it seems that shrimps are going in.
Was wondering if anyone have first hand experience using this tank and perhaps shed some light!
Thankss!!
What shrimps are you intending to keep
The Fluval Spec V uses a internal overflow sump (IOS) filtration system. To prevent shrimps and shrimplets crawling into the intake slots, just cover the intake slots with a layer of dense sponge, or some fish netting will work too.
Note that due to the need for a balanced in and out flow for IOS filtration systems, make sure that the covered intake slots don't get clogged up with too much debris until the inflow becomes too slow, as the pump may gradually pump out all the water from the filtration chambers and end up running dry.
Arron: RCS! =)
Urban Aquaria: Thanks a lot for the information and the suggestions! Really appreciate it!
Hi, I've setup my Fluval Spec 5 for shrimp and now it's under-going fishless cycle. I noticed the water temperature is always around 30° C, do I just need a cooling fan or a chiller? Please advise. Thank you.
If you are keeping RCS shrimps, they are generally hardier and can live and breed in a wider range of temperatures and conditions so its not too much of an issue, though cooler waters would be appreciated.
If you are keeping CRS shrimps, they can have narrower temperature tolerance, so although they may be able to live in warmer temperatures, their lifespan and breeding rate may be lower, so cooler water is more important for such shrimps.
If you are keeping sulawesi shrimps, they thrive and breed in warm waters, so no problems with higher temperatures.
Either way, if you have a shrimp tank with warmer water temperatures, do remember to increase aeration and surface agitation to improve oxygenation of the water, as warmer water tends to hold less oxygen.
As of now, no. I suggest you record the temperature in the morning, afternoon and night, then decide. Try keep temp under 28
I don't think you should even t try sulawesi. They're incredibly hard to mauntain with their high ph
Yes you can but they will mate. You can mix all the different types of neocardinal but they're offspring will be brownish or clear
Thanks, Arron. For the advises.

Decided to get a chiller instead of using the cooling fan.
I started with 5 RCS, 5 orange fishes with a black dot on the tail, 1 panda loach & 1 algae eater fish. So far 1 RCS KIA.![]()
very nice setup. do share updates with us. thanks
all my shrimps KIA. With the chiller, the temperature still very unstable. Back to platies...
