1cm is still okay, usually when it reaches 3-4cm thick (or if you begin to notice signs of the bottom layers starting to turn yellow or brown and melting), then it's time to do regular trimming.

Thanks bro UA. Good to know that....prefer to see the thickness!
post-hijack!
was at GC awhile ago and the Master was in the house. he was quite free and we had a brief conversation with him regarding HC, hairgrass and MC. seems like his current favourite is MC cos he says they're the easiest to grow!
one interesting thing he said though, was that he thinks trimming MC is not required for lush growth, as we all know that that's usually much needed for almost every other plant. what do you guys think? do you trim (and replant?) your MC to encourage carpeting?
Well, its indeed not necessary to trim carpet plants like MC in order to get lush growth, they will eventually fill in the gaps on their own... though not trimming them does tend to result in messy growth.
Pruning them regularly and re-planting helps to fill in the gaps faster and ensure more even growth height amongst all the plants (instead of some patches taller, some patches shorter, unless that the original intention).![]()
Yeah, MC grows by stems/runners both horizontally and vertically, similar to HC. Main difference is MC has noticeably larger leaves than compared to HC (very apparent when you see them grown side-by-side).
Trimming is basically cutting the taller stems/runners (and removing any brown/melting parts) to keep the overall carpet neat and at consistent height. Most people also replant the healthy cut parts to fill in gaps and help the plants propagate faster across the substrate too.
thanks UA for the friendly help once again!
I trimmed off some of my MC before my original post. Saw the slightly brownish patch in some areas after trimming. It's been a week plus now and the brownish patches are still around. I'm going to wait till they are 3-4 cm before trimming next tim.
Its best to manually remove those brownish patches as part of regular plant maintenance, since they wouldn't repair themselves and will just continue deteriorating/melting over time.
Removing or uprooting them and replanting patches with fresh new MC from other areas will help to ensure healthy growth.
Ok thanks.
goalkeeper and tureblue, happen to have any before/after photos?
Bro Gavan here you go....notice those brown patches all over.... They are the areas I trimmed.

I lost 10 pots of mc and hc from being gone for 10days and not trimming prior to leaving. Good thing was that the tops were still green so I managed to make new portions. Definitely a must on trimming. I noticed it started at around the 3 inch tall mark.
