13mm lily pipes
13mm lily pipes
Thank u boss, both inlet and outlet 13mm?
Seems so, i just read from your filter box
The 12mm and then 16mm one confuses me lol
12mm is inner diameter, 16mm outer
I see now, thanks for your help!!
With My pleasure
Just for future reference...
9/12 hoses = 9mm or 10mm lily pipes
12/16 hoses = 13mm lily pipes
16/22 hoses = 17mm lily pipes
Thank u bro! Any recommendations for a cost effective one?
Depends in the design/build quality and your budget... i find the VIV and gUSH brand ones quite good for their prices.
The ANS and Easy Aqua ones could also be considered too, they are abit cheaper but the shapes of their lily pipe outflows can sometimes be abit odd and quality seems to differ between batches, so have to check before buying.
Most important is the outflow design has to be shaped and angled properly so that the flow pattern is correct (look at the original ADA ones to get an idea of the correct shapes and angles), if the outflows are not done right, it'll not work as effectively.
An alternative to glass lily pipes are acrylic ones (much easier to handle and clean, wouldn't break, but slightly less clear and scratches more easily over time), here is a review i did on a version ordered from eBay:

Saw your post about the DSM HC growth earlier, and it was my inspiration to go to a planted tank plus switch to a canister from a HOB. Awesome work!
I saw some cheap lily pipes at seaview earlier. Forgot the brand though, but 22 each for inflow/outflow.
Forgot to check if they are acrylic or glass. If I opt for the acrylic one, the 12mm u reviewed will do fine?
Yeah, the acrylic lily pipes i reviewed have been working well for my setups so far, they have the correct shape/angle and create the mini-vortex effect at the water surface.
I actually ordered a few more sets recently and am currently using them on most of my tanks. They are relatively cost effective anyways (just S$30+ for a full set with free shipping) and easier to maintain.
Forgot to mention... although acrylic pipes don't break, you have to use a flexible brush with very soft bristles to clean them, as the acrylic material tends to scratch easily if less flexible or harder bristle brushes are used.
Thanks!
The ebay link got me a little confused as it states 12mm while lily pipes normally are 13mm sizing.
Might opt for them then. I normally hand wash my items, not intending to use a brush. Thanks for your advice!
Yes, choose the 12mm version... different sellers like to create their own labels and spec names so it does get abit confusing at times.
You'll need a long flexible brush to push though and clean the insides of the lily pipes (algae and mulm will accumulate in it, can't use fingers to access and clean inside the pipes). I use the NAG flexible pipe brush to do all my lily pipe cleanng, it's soft bristles are both glass and acrylic friendly. Here is a photo of it:
Photo from eBay.
Just do a search on eBay for "NAG flexible tube filter pipe brush" and various sales listings should pop up.
Thanks for the help thus far, Urban Aquaria!!
Might make a trip down to seaview, check out the $22 lily pipes to see if they are glass or acrylic before making a decision.
Just one more quick question, how do you guys set up the trays?
The water flow seems to be that of a typical canister, from bottom to top before going back into the tank. This is how i have it set up right now. The mechanical filter is made up of two pieces, the black one looks similar to those aquarium pre sponge filter, the white one seems to be wrapped around a carbon piece.
What would be an ideal setup, assuming i use back the original items included?Attachment 44512
The common filter media placement follows a coarse -> medium -> fine layout... so its usually the coarse sponge (to trap larger debris), then the bio-media (to trap medium debris), then the fine white sponge (to trap fine debris).
If the fine white sponge is the first layer that it'll just end up trapping all the large, medium and fine debris on its own and clog up very fast. Therefore the fine white sponge should ideally be the last layer.
I've used a similar canister filter design (the ISTA version) before and what i did was put the coarse black sponge at the very bottom as first layer of filtration, put abit of the bio-media on top of the black sponge, put the rest of the bio-media in the top tray, then the fine white sponge above the bio-media as the last layer of filtration.
Yup, that's how the white sponge is. As far as I know, Azoo, Shiruba, Eden, Ista etc are all from the same manufacturing plant, just rebadged.
Sole difference being the media it comes with, the prepackaged Azoo media is supposedly one of the better ones. The rest only come with ceramic rings.
Thanks for your suggestion bro, Will probably go
Black sponge --> ceramic rings from old filter to help with cycling --> new bio media ---> fine white sponge.
Just need to monitor for flow and hope I don't overstock the bio media lol
The acrylic lily pipes finally arrived today.
Will set them up tomorrow! Can't wait!
Urban bro, how low do you recommend the positioning of the lily pipes from the water surface?
