    Hi all!

Fell in love the vivid colors of Apistos awhile ago. And I recently decided to splurge a little, (they were worth every penny in my opinion) and made a trip down to GC to get myself a pair of Apistogramma Borelli.

It's been 2 days since I've gotten them and I'm crossing my fingers, hoping I haven't gotten myself a sneaker male. (which I think is highly unlikely) The pair has been following each other around and hanging around the same areas and I do hope they find each other 'attractive' hehe.

The male has been a little aggressive today though, nipping at the rest of the fishes who swam close to his little potty hideout. And the female has been having disappearing stripes every few minutes. I'm still a newbie so even this is intriguing me. Haha!

Here are some photos I've taken just 10 minutes ago 3 photos of the female to show the stripes changing. Yay.

    Loving the fish emoticons,
    Selene

Very nice pair. You should place a small mirror inside to let the male flare . I am sure it will further amazed you.

Haha I don't need to>< He flares at my killies, my guppies, the neighbouring betta and the other neighbouring tank of shrimps. >< I have no idea why he is so nippy though. Though they were suppose to be peaceful community fishes >< The female got even yellower today>< and their stripes disappearing and appearing seconds later is so cool.

Well, it will be most aggressive when it was confronted its own image.

Anyway, looks like it is doing it's guard duty judging from your description. You will know after 7 days.

Hi tureblue82, your borelli should be different variant of the borelli.

Sounded very similar to my Veijita Gold pair! Some experts here says my female most likely is a sneaker male. But doesn't look like it in your borelli. Maybe some experts here can help to advise.

Sometimes the mating process can be very agressive and the female(or male) can kill the other party. You should monitor closely, if not, just isolate the male to another tank or partition.

Re: My first pair of Apistos: Apistogramma Borelli

Just for a short period of time like a week. Then you can try putting them back again to see the response.

Usually during the mating ritual, the male or the female will chase after one another in a very aggressive way. Very often the tail gets torned, the body get nipped at and the most extreme killed by the other.

Another possiblilty is, the female turns out to be a "she-male" or sneaker male. It looks like female and will also imitate the yellow coloring on its body. Very common scenerio in apisto keeping.

Ahh i see i see. I do hope I havent gotten myself a sneaker male.

But currently, the male and female seem to be alright. The male is just staying at a certain area. And even when they meet, there isnt as much aggression. Hope they have made up?

I'm quite surprised though. The nips on the tail of the male healed overnight yesterday. Seems as though nothing ever happened @@

All in all, the female is still showing vivid yellow with black in the front of her dorsal and ventral fins. The male too is still colorful and flaring at times. So I guess the stress levels is not so much of a concern as of now?

Just leave them together and monitor closely. As long the malefish is not in danger, then let them continue their private affair.

Re: My first pair of Apistos: Apistogramma Borelli

Thanks so much for your advice! I followed it and let them do their stuff. And offed the lights whenever it gets too rough. It kinda got better after.

But well! I have good news. My female has ben hiding at a crevice below the apisto pot for a few days now and she had a bloated tummy for the past few days. Just now when I came home and on the lights, she showed really vivid black stripes with yellow. And i kinda suspected, so i peeked into the little crevice and guess what I found!

    Eggs!!

Any experts can advise what to take note? Should I remove the dither fishes and SAE for now? (The female and SAE hates each other. I have no idea why)

    Thanks all in advance! (:

Congratz, can see the eggs very clearly on the exterior of the pot.

You should remove, else once the eggs are hatched they will be gone. If the eggs or fries are eaten up this time, the apisto usually will spawn again in next few weeks. If this happens, you need to remove the dithers and SAE and get ready for the next spawn.

Re: My first pair of Apistos: Apistogramma Borelli

Thanks! I think i'll transfer the dithers first to my main tank first. Cos algae eaters have an issue of dying in my main tank :/

Is it possible that the eggs arent fertilised though? Cos i read online that if eggs are white that usually means they're infertilised? I lifted the pot a little with pincers, to get a clearer image. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1416751775.155640.jpg

And if they really are fertilised, how long would it take before they hatch?
