Re: tank with no water change

Its possible... the larger the tank volume, the more efficient the filtration, the more densely planted and fast growing the plants in it and the lower the bio-load... the less water changes required, because the small amount of waste is diluted by the larger water volume and neutralized by the filter and plants easily.

Basically its all about the ratio between water volume + filter efficiency + plant nutrient take-up rate vs bio-load.

Put only 1 guppy in the tank, supply lots of light and let the plants and algae grow wild... confirm the tank will be able to easily handle that single bio-load .

With this kind of setup, may not even need to do any water change at all for months, just top up water when necessary... it'll be an ultra low-maintenance tank.

2ft is rather small, but doable if you've a powerful filter.
However, the sponge filter is rather weak. Perhaps a canister filter will work.
Water wisteria is a good plant for nutrient export so it may work. Moss, on the other hand, is not.

Also depends on the number of guppies you intend to keep (:

Re: tank with no water change

The greater the number of fishes, the more frequent the maintenance. It's all about balancing between the various factors, as UA points out.

If you want to keep, say 10 guppies, I would recommend changing water at least once fortnightly. If 20, once a week. That's just an approximate gauge.

I would really recommend a canister filter if you want longer intervals between water changes.

This tank lasted me almost 2 years without water change. Just weekly top up of water. In fact, some shrimps die if there are any water changes.

It was a shrimp only tank with 2 otos with a low 20-21 degrees temperature.

Plants are very green! Not like mine dull color. What filter are you using? No co2?

Re: tank with no water change

Actually, if the level of nitrate increase is slow and gradual. hardy fishes can slowly get use to the level but as joe mentions , if water change, there might be casualities in this type of scenario. Case in point, i have a friend who does not do water change for many years, his platys survived. the water smells like sewerage water but once he try to be nice to the fishes and do water change. 70% of his 20 platies died.

I would not recommend maintaining such tanks as when itchy hand syndrome strikes, new fishes can't adapt fast enough for such "toxic tank"

i suspect is the high nitrate level.

CO2 was used for the first few weeks for the plants to grow in and after that, its all natural CO2 from the hundreds of shrimps in that tank

whats the joy of no water change in this aquatic hobby?

hobby should involve some maintenance, some part to appreciate the tangible and intangible benefits and of course to spend some $$ regularly.... this would help keep the hobby sustainable

Re: tank with no water change

Stressed bro, since it is brings you joy, can we work out some agreement, which entails you changing water for my tank? Haha

And it will also be good if you could pass me some money to sustain my hobby. Thanks a million.

GC does offer maintenance service, as long as you give them money to sustain them
