So if I had this RO machine, can I mix it with tap water 50/50? Is that good?
Reason I ask is, because my tonina is this ugly light dodo green color , and all the leaves are growing white and they are turning clear, which is actually melting . Can't get it to live . Thanks.

    Eric,

Tonina need water with very low KH, 1 degree or less. Otherwise it would melt. That's, do not add any baking soda.

No, that is not true at all. Folks all over the aquatic plant world have growth it and found that they can be grown in harder water as well. The plant does not like to be shaded, loves NO3 and good amount of CO2 or else it will melt.

The following url provide some interesting data of the above plant

    http://www.aquahobby.com/garden/e_tonina.php

If using ADA soil it does help the plant grow.

    Cheers

Do you think a mix of distilled water and tap would be ok, and would the water be soft for the tonina? Thanks.

Yes, if your present tap water is too hard. Distilled is expensive, and RO is a lot cheaper way to get the same result, usually.

Hardness will be a direct proportion of the mix. Distilled water has, by definition, zero dissolved solids, hence zero hardness. Add half tap water to get 50% hardness. 1/4 tap water to 3/4 distilled would give 25% GH and so forth.

BTW, there are very active aquarium clubs in HI, including a general one in the Honolulu area, I think. To get a handle on how to live with local water, such groups can be much more direct help than those of us with differing local conditions. Go to :
    http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/M...8/articles.htm,
and contact my friends Mach Fukada or Dan Carson. Both are generous with help.

Apologies, but that link doesn't seem to work for me, for some reason. It works great from my browser, but not from the forum.

If you have the same problem, just do a web search for Honolulu Aquarium Society and go to their home page, that way.
