Hi guys I'm new on chiller and canister.. Currently running on hang on back filter and my water temp is at 29 degrees. I wanted to bring it down to 20 degrees so I thought of getting a chiller. What chiller do you guys recommend for a 2feet tank?

And also, I heard that chiller has to be fitted with power filter or pump.. So does it means I need to get a canister/pump?

    Please advice

There are many established brands of chiller out there for you to choose. Take your time to find out more and compare them. I am just throwing some names here for you: Teco, Artica, Hailea. I would think you need at least one with 1/10hp, but I do tend to buy a bigger just in case I upgrade.

But to bring down 9 degrees, I think you will need a much more powerful one. Before making that decision, you need to understand that there is a strong possibility of constant condensation on your tank if your your current tank's surrounding environment remains the same; imagine a cold cup of iced water on the kitchen table. When that happens you cannot see your tank clearly without constant wiping of the tank. So unless you really need a tank temperature of

It is preferable to run some sort of mechanical filter before your chiller to ensure that nothing big get trapped inside. A canister would be best but not necessary. At minimum, you could run one of those powerhead with a sponge at the inlet.

There is simply no need to run a tank at 20 degree temperature. I think you can rear almost all types of shrimps and even mini pelia at around 25 degrees. Think of environment and also your pocket heh.
1/10 sounds like the best fit. If you are a little more kiasu.... Buy 1/4 which should even get you by a 3x1.5x1.5ft tank.

I'm keeping dwarf snakeheads at the moment..they are sub tropical species and would require around 19-22 as they need winter temperature and summer temp to promote breeding.

Uhm one more thing..is it a must to run a chiller with canister? Because I would still prefer using hang-on-back filters.

It is not a must. You can run it with powerheads but if your question is specifically whether can you run a chiller with hang-on-back filters. I think the answer is no.

    Re: chiller with canister conbo?

I do not think it will. Some power would be lost going through the chiller and usually the addition of this flow would help to circulate the water in the tank better.

Wah the. You would find yourself trying to look at the snakehead through the foggy glass. 20 degrees water is simply much too low... Too difficult to achieve unless you put your tank in constant aircon
