That looks like the emersed growth form of Rotala sp "Nanjenshan".

In my photos, you can see the difference between the emersed form at the bottom section of the stems vs the submersed growth form at the top section of the stems.

Interesting. But have to wait and see if the top grows out to be needle like as seen from your post. I bought this thinking it was HM. It was the closest match I could find. Is there any traits of HM I should look out for so I won't make the same mistake?

Yeah, HM is quite tricky to spot at the LFS, but here are some photos to help with the ID:

HM in emersed form with rounded leaves, the common form packaged in pots at most LFS...



They look very similar to HC and Monte Carlo, many people confuse these plants with each other, so they get a surprise after some time when the actual growth in their tank becomes different.

HM in submersed form, after adapting to tank conditions, leaves become narrower...

Wow! These two plants are the same plant? It's so hard to imagine. Thanks! I'll go and find some of these. Throw all in the tank and see which one fits better.
