    Re: hydrogen peroxide

A few members have tried this before. The bleach vs hydrogen peroxide discussion was also brought up recently in another thread.

    What is your concern here?

Any direct application of any chemical will harm all fauna.

Hydrogen Peroxide/Bleach treatment of algae is similar to using a flame-thrower to light a cigar. It gets the job done but it must be done with caution and care otherwise you might burn your face off.

    Re: hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) is a safer alternative to bleach when it comes to treating algae... H2O2 turns into oxygen in water so it becomes harmless after a short while. I've even heard of people using it to oxygenate their aquariums in emergencies.

The key to safe usage in tanks with livestock is to spot dose it so that only isolated areas receive the treatment (use a dosing syringe or pipette). You just have to be careful not to dose it directly onto fishes as the concentrated dosages can "burn" them.

Some people do high concentration tank-wide dosing to try and kill all the algae in the tank (especially if they have a really bad algae problem where everything is covered in algae), in that case its best to remove all the livestock, do the treatment, let the filters run for a while, once most of the H2O2 dissipates, then re-introducing back the livestock.
