What i know is that refractometer measure salinity not specific gravity[which is temperature dependent] and hence may be more accurate??Originally Posted by Darylyap
It is calibrated by using the relationship between the refractive index of the water and the amount of salt content.
But right now at the beginning, i may not need such accurate measurement.
btw, would there be significant adverse effects if the actual sg is slightly out of the specified range [due to the error of measurement in hydrometer]?
A slight changes in salinity will not do much harm. However, u'll be surprise how in-accurate is a hydrometer when u compare it to a refractometer.
I have one refractometer that used for only a few times. Cause most of the time doing water change, I'll use the hydrometer and offset the readings. Only use refractometer if I think the salinity is out of range by a lot.

Is it possible for SG to be ok while the salinity to be out (at the same time)?
Or vice versa?
Salinity and SG are closely related. The only different is that SG is dependent on gravity and temperature also.
