If you can afford it, check out TECO and Artica chiller. Resun CL450 is priced very attractive but product reliability is not so consistent.
Hi..im thinking of setting up a 4 footer planted tank..been doing reading and survey..
initially i tot of using a chiller for it and was browsing on its horsepower. I went to systems and control and enquired on a 0.5hp chiller...was informed that i could just do with 1/6hp or 1/4hp... as such im confused.. although the bigget the hp the better it is i was wondering the minimum horse power that i could use...
I tot of getting resun cl450 for my 4 footer and it is 1/6hp..Mr chan frm NA told me that it suitable for 3-4 ft tanks..
Thus im enquiring regarding this to the forum..Any opinions??
Thanks
Pls post it here

I'm using a 0.5HP Daeil Fishcooler from System and Control Engineering to cool a 6ft tank. And that is mainly because I'm running it 6 ft away from the tank itself. Was told a 0.25HP is sufficient if I run it closer to my tank.
Runs for 15mins every 2 to 3 hours. Whatever brand you intend to get, see if you can get some feedback from other users first.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
artica comes with a 2 year warranty (or is it 3).
daeil and artica are generally the same (daeil being the OEM and artica being the rebranded one.) I'm not entirely certain but some lfs guy has mentioned that artica is using titanium piping and daeil is not?
I asked because I remembered you mentioning this before. Daeil is using titanium too.

How is this product? Any trouble for you since you run this chiller?
How much would I need if I want a Daeil Chiller to run for my 350l tank?

hi thx again...and yes i would love to get better brands but the pricing are kinda of on the higher side..thats y im trying to source out 2nd hand ones..
well, trust us on this. buying cheaper chillers tend to = MORE NOISE, if you think you can live with the noise in the dead of the night without your financial office complaining...
daeil and artica are quiet.

Hi,
To share my experience using chiller.
I used to have Hailea-AquaMedic Chiller model HL-380CA 0.5HP for my 6ft tank with 3 x MH 150w. When there is a big change in temperature like 2-3 deg c , like 50% water change and time of day also during hot days, I found that it will run for few hours to drop from 28 deg c to 25 deg c.
Now I change to Hailea-AquaMedic Chiller 1HP model (can't remember the exact model) for the same 6ft tank. The chilling effect and power is fantastic. The time it used to chill the water down now reduces to less than 30 mins worst case.
It is always to have 1 size up the power that you need in case of big changes of temperature as well as to cater for your future tank upgrade or lighting upgrade.
Cheers

How much what? Money?I don't know the HP requirements... but lower then 1/4 hp. The recommended for Artica/Daeil is 1/4HP for a "standard" 6ft tank which is roughly 600litres.
So far no problems. Artica gives you 2 yrs warranty. Daeil is one yr only. Daeil servicing is by System and Control Engineering. Daeil is slightly cheaper.
I'm using the Daeil Fishcooler which is the white one that looks like an aircon compressor. That one is not so quiet, but mine is in the balcony and the noise hardly noticeble from inside the house. Even in the balcony (where I have my meals), it's not so loud that it disrupts conversations. I have plants near it and I was worried the plants would dry up from the hot air directed towards them, but so far no such problem.

I placed my 1 HP chiller beside my 6ft tank and noise is acceptable , like a strong , full blast aircon fancoil unit . The chiller heat is also acceptable in my living area.

The other things is heat. If you have to close all the windows and doors when you go to work, you will come back to a suana. Also bad for the chiller as it will have to work harder. Part of the heat removed and transferred to the air will eventually go back to the tank water as well.
I have a friend using the Artica/Daeil (1/4HP I think). Placed in a ventilated cabinet in the living room. Vents out to a well ventilated service area. No complaints of heat or noise.
Since you are looking for a second hand chiller, note that the older Teco models are noisier and less efficient. They were made for temperate countries. Don't know about the recent Teco models.
Go talk to people in the marine hobby. A lot of them use chillers. But beware that some forums are bias towards certain brands for various reasons that are not appropriate for me to mention.

May make a difference in the extra $$$ you have to pay for electricity. I am told the old Teco's raises the bill by as much as $60. For Artica/Daeil, ppl say $20 to $30. That's what I am getting so far.
Let's say $30 difference. 1 yr $360 more. 2yrs $720.
Ok ok... I know, budget is a pain.![]()

Normally, how long does it run? And how long before the next? I have friends whose chillers run very short whiles but very often. Talking about minutes.
What is your thermostat settings?
How much extra are you paying for electricity?

I always set my temp for 25 deg C, and it will kick in when it reaches 26 deg C. For 1 HP chiller, it normally kicks every 40 mins or 1 hrs depends on the type of days in the year, with my 3 x 150w MH on. It normally run for less than 10mins to chiller back down to 25 deg c.
If the chiller consistently kick-in every few minutes, and you can see temperature indicator number keep flipping up-and-down, very high chance there may be a mix-up between the inlet and outlet. That was happened to me (pai seh) !
As I compare my eletricity bill average is hoovering around 520-550 kWh per month. This is including the 3 x 150w MH. Other tanks pumps, and household usage. Previously was around 250 kWh , without the aquarium hobby. So it around $40-$45 increase in electricity bill. Water bill is marginal as cost is low, increase from 15 Cu M to 25 Cu M ~$10 increase.
I bought 2 Resun CL450 about 2 months now and the noise is not that bad....about the noise of 2 AC fans at a lower note.....
Considering the better brands, for the price of 2 chillers = 5 Resun chillers......with this ratio, I dont really bother with the warranty that still needs me to carry it back for servicing and not to mention downtime.

2 chillers?? both in the same tank?? how big is ur tank then? cl450 is alright for a 4x1.5x1.5 rite??
I have 2 tanks.......1 of them is a 4x1.5x1.5 while the other is a 4x1.5x2.....the CL450 is enough even for the latter tank.....but if you are just buying for 1 tank, get the CL650 which is just 50 bucks more.....

CL650 produces a little bit more than the CL450?

How much would a 1/4hp Daeil Fishcooler cost?
