What kind of prawn is it? I don't know if this applies but for crayfish you need slightly warmer water, more food, good aeration and less stress stressful environment. Giving them iodine will also make the moulting process smoother.

My prawn has some shell rot on him which was already there when I got him and I am worried that the shell rot may develop sufficiently and cause problems for him the next time he molts so I am finding ways to make him molt faster before the shell rot becomes an issue. Anybody here have any ideas on how to do that?

It is a giant freshwater prawn. I have been feeding him a lot and giving him good aeration. A slit has also appeared at the place where his head connects to his tail. Is this a sign of molting?

Nice, I never managed to keep them alive for more than 3 days before. How do you do it? And yeah head slits connecting to the tail widening is a sign of moulting

What conditions did you keep them in in the past?

I just drop them into my matured tank, fresh water. How do you do it?

It might be because your tank PH, water hardness and oxygen levels are too low. You need 7-8.5 PH, at least 75% oxygen saturation and your water hardness needs to be between 40-150ppm. Temperature should also be about 18-34 degrees Celsius but I don't think that would be an issue in Singapore.

Thanks, I'll try that out next time!

May I know how did you obtain yours?

I get them from Prawning, is there any other way to get it?

If you get the from prawning, inspecting the injury caused to them by the hook also helps because if the hook digs in too deep, they can bleed out and die within days.

I will take note of that next time thanks. Has your prawn moulted yet?

Yes he has molted already.

Occasionally, I would have some trimmings to give away in exchange for a can of Milk Coffee. PM me to deal.

Stress is dependent on how comfortable it is in the tank, in general just provide lots of hiding spaces, larger area for it to explore and remove threats such as other crayfishes. Water quality preferrably neutral or slightly hard water, high in nutrients. For feeding i usually feed mine with Hikari Crab cuisine and hikari sinking wafers but as a rule of thumb you want something with calcium. Otherwise sinking vegetables and blood worms work fine. Also, try not to let them escape the tank so you might want to get a cover.

I keep him in the same tank as the prawn and apparently the prawn is afraid of him because he keeps bullying the prawn so I partitioned the tank and each of them have their own space. I have tried feeding him cabbage and carrots but he isn't interested in them. I also don't see him eating the algae wafers that I use to feed the prawn. I have also grown some Java moss in the tank for him to chew on but it appears that he is more interested in eating the driftwood as I have seen him on many occasions taking a bite out of the driftwood.

Just saw him eating the algae pellets. The algae pellets already have high calcium and high iodine in them so there wouldn't be a need to put any iodine supplements.

They will eat anything that sinks just give them time to adjust to the food. What brand of algae wafers are you feeding?
