Do guppy fry survive in a community tank with other fishes such as Neon Tetras, Threadfin Rainbows, etc...? I'd like to keep 2 male guppies together with some females, but I don't want 10000 guppies in a few months. Would like the fry to become a tasty treat for my other fishes though.

    Re: Survival of Guppy Fry

Depends on the size of your tank and the plant density... but if your intention is for the other fishes to eat the guppy fry to help control the guppy population, it might work. Quite often the larger female guppies are the ones which snack on the fry.

Though if you feed your fishes well and they get accustomed to commercial food, most of them might ignore the fry and the guppy population may still steadily increase over time.

Awesome, thanks! I plan to supplement the flake with live tubifex and frozen bloodworms, so hopefully that will keep them eating fry

I started off with 2 females and a male guppy back in June 2014. Since then, they have been giving birth to fries. But mostly one or two survive each time. But 2 weeks ago. I spotted more than ten young fries in my tank. They r still surviving as of now

Correction, fry not fries. Plural form of fry is still fry.

When I used to keep livebearers, I always separate the fry from the parents whenever I spot them. Livebearers are cannibals and will not hesitate to eat their young when given the chance. The chance of survival would be much higher when raised in isolation.

Buy those widely available breeder nets. You can raise the fry in these nets without having to move them to another tank.

If the fish tank has a lots of plants, usually the fry would do just okay.. I like Thai Glass Catfish, I did some research on it and if your intend is to control your guppy fry population, TGCF is an option..

haha I'm the opposite of you

I wish my guppies will breed more and faster, but usually only 2-3 fry survive

others probably end up as food

As for me.. I intend to breed AFR. Every little fry is precious to me ahha. So far my 8 AFR fry is growing well in my breeder box !
Previously i had breed those normal guppy, really breed non stop, i can easily see 30-40 fry swimming around. End up, i give away and throw some into my Angel fish tank, hehe.

Wa, personally I can't stand seeing fish eating live fish, even baby fries. Every baby fish fry is precious to me, lol.

Ya, I also can't stand seeing feeder fish being fed to big fish.
Of course in the sea, big fish eat smaller fish all the time. But that is not our fault.
