Co2 will do wonders to your plants. Excel alone will not be able to bring out plants' best form in my opinion. Nowadays there are many nano co2 setups available in the market.
Hi shifus,
just started a 20l tank with a HOF, borneowild shrimp substrate, lights, carpeting with MC and some salvinas. Just wondering if dosing with Seachem excel would be enough for the MC to grow? Don't see much pearling though. Have not decided if I should get a CO2 system cos of the small tank. I also intend to keep some shrimps, ottos, snail and perhaps some small fish.
what do you guys think?
Thanks in advance.

Hey Hann thanks. Are you referring to disposable CO2 systems? Those are quite expensive.
Yup. Otherwise, get a normal co2 cylinder with solenoid and nano accessories
I am a bit hesitant as I am attempting to grow only one type of plant (MC)... How about CO2 tablets? Are they effective? Any side effects to shrimps?
Long term wise it doesn't make economical sense. Also in term of functionality, they are not so effective. Maybe you may want to consider moss or anubias plant which are not as demanding.
Thanks Hann.. Is MC a demanding plant? I already painstakingly planted it In my tank![]()
i can carpet monte carlo in my 2ft tank without CO2 but i used DSM so it established faster
I actually started with DSM for one week. Decided to flood my tank a couple of days ago.
Yeah the Monte Carlo.. Was just thinking of dosing it with Excel only. Don't see any pearling
not pearling does not mean it is not going to carpet lol
Anyone manage to get pearling in a low tech tank without CO2?
It could be possible with very high light and very fast growing plants... but generally without Co2 injection, the plant photosynthesis rate is greatly restricted by the limited carbon supply, so it very difficult for them to work at such high rate and produce enough oxygen to achieve saturation in the water and produce pearling effect.
That being said, i have managed to get some pearling effect from fissidens growing in an outdoor container (without any Co2 injection)... here is a photo:
In this case, i figure that it's probably due to the unique combination of very high light (ie. direct strong sunlight) + high water temperature (ie. >32°C due to outdoor heat conditions, warmer water holds less oxygen therefore it reaches saturation level faster) + very small water volume (only less than 1L of water in the container, less water = quicker oxygen saturation)... it's not exactly an ideal environment to subject most actual aquariums to though.![]()
Nice UA... Maybe I should buy a disposable CO2 set and turn it on when I feel like looking at that pearling effect! Haha
just some experience. I got a few CO2 tablets and they didnt seem to have much effect even in my nano tank. I would say save the money and get a small Co2 setup. The tables start adding up and run out quickly.
