You can make the same hang-on overflow structure and design using cheap PVC pipes and joints (lots of DIY tutorials online for those), they all work on the same concept... just that it doesn't look so nice.

Yes, the external hang on overflow work the same,you dont need to drill holes to the tank. If you dont want to DIY buy the ready made one like this
