Where to buy a tank?

I am thinking of buying a 6 foot tank with cabinet, but I got no idea where is a good place to buy the tank.

I am actually looking at CR Aquarium. Has anyone bought from them before?

I am also thinking of the juwel tanks, anyone know where I can get them? Saw the advertisment in the Classified about a 10% discount on all Juwel tanks, but not very sure where I can see a sample.

Juwel tanks has a maximum size of 5 ft. You can find them on display at Sam Yick in Joo Chiat, United Square, Marine Parade and Simei.

try searching thru AF as some tank makers have adverts there specialising in large tanks. got pics of their work in their gallery. here's link to one of them.

ps: i totally not related to them, but happen to chance upon their posts, looks very impressive....

me myself can't wait to lay my hands on one of the bigger size tanks if not fer wife n mother's objections....

Anyway I just went to CR Aquarium. They are having this 50% discount for their Jin Long Tanks.

I will be going to Sam Yicks to check out the Juwel tanks first (5 feets are okay I guess).

Then may go to the other shops like C328 and the mentioned ones to check out the prices and designs.

I have been looking around as well to get a custom made tank, not a big one [48(L) x24(W) x 30(H)] But I want it to be professional and the hood & cabinet to look great, with rounded edges, laminated all sides sufficient air circulation to allow a chiller to be safely inside, out of view, three draw layout, with the center door removed with an adjustable shelf etc etc .

I have found most places that I have visited to show me a tank they have handy and essentially I need to fit in with what is available, in the end I was drawing/printing diagram’s in MS PowerPoint to show people and to keep a record of the discussion.

The “tank_Maker” link above, and I repeat for convenience sake only [http://www.arofanatics.com/members/tank_maker/] listened to what I wanted, took notes against a generic schematic, questioned my reasons why I had certain sizes allocated to different parts of my diagram. This was done in a manner that impressed me.

I have not bought a tank yet, but not far away from making the purchase decision

hmmm... sounds professional.... i was very impressed with their gallery and the jobs they had done, n their prices from their webpage seems resonable too.... really envy u to have chance to talk to them....

think i gotta wait till i can convince the two women in my house....

Tank_maker sounds good.. haven't talked to them yet... But I am taking my time

Anyway I was at Sam's to look at their Juwel Rio Tanks, I am impressed, they are really quite well made. Although the price is pretty much on the high side, I am seriously considering.

Next stop I think I am going to Systems to look at Bioplast tanks.

Have a look at the tanks at Far East Aquatic [23 Simon Street, near Kovan MRT], upstairs they have a couple of tanks that have really well made cabinets when I went there I knew I couldn't live with a Juwel, which were about the same price.

Unfortunately you can’t talk to the maker…

The challenges of tank selection - my 2 cents worth
Firstly start with the end in mind, by that I mean find a picture of your ideal future state tank setup in the way you want it. This is easier than it sounds, but my advice is to define your requirements on what you want to keep inside the tank and be as specific as possible.

I wanted that perfect picture that described everything I wanted, but as you would expect there wasn’t one. So I collected pictures of so many tank setups, one I liked and ones that were good also, others that were beyond what I could dream about. I narrowed down my search to a theme and kept on collecting. I expect that you will not find the picture that describes what you want, but a couple of them will represent your thoughts. I had a word documents that was named “great tank pictures”, that was/is the basis of my inspiration.

Size & Construction of tank
I was influenced by the Juwel tanks, partly because the brochure’s that are available make them look good, but Amano pictures began to dominate my “great pictures” file that I was keeping.

I recommend that you have an established budget, but it does not hurt to dream and think beyond the boundaries of what you want, especially if this clarifies your thinking. This link will test your budget resolve…

I came to a size of 48L x 24W x 30H [inches], what I liked about AMA tanks is that they do not have any bracing. I have yet to find a tank maker in Singapore that can make a 48L x 24W x 30H without braces so I guess I will need to keep on searching.

Yet Amano’s tanks at AMA’s Nature Aquarium Gallery are without braces & the sizes are:

90x45x60cm
120x45x60cm
180x60x60cm
180x120x60cm
350x70xx70cm

Patience
If you cannot find what you want then don’t worry, take your time, it is out there somewhere and better to save your money. Easier said than done, when you see selling great deals on fish/plants and you haven’t got anything.

Lastly keep in mind the total solution, where is the chiller going to sit? Are you going to get a chiller? Location in the apartment? Who do else in the family, do you need to keep happy so that you can get what you want… I actually have cut out some paper dimensions of the proposed tank and stuck them on the wall so that I can imagine what it looks like

Anyway this is my 2 cents worth

i got my 3 feet braceless tank 1 week ago from a tank maker. it uses 10mm glass and black silicone (ADA clear/minimal silicone is my dream). so far quite okie. for 4 feet braceless i wonder it would be at least 12mm thickness.

please keep update us your findings. especailly if there is any tank maker can make ADA style tank using clear silicone (or at least something similar).

I am stilll looking.. I must say Amano's tanks are truly impressive, can we get those in Singapore?

By the way, are chillers really required in for our weather, someone told me that subtrate heating is good for the plants, but that doesn't seem to fit together with the need for a chiller. Chiller only needed for MH lighting rite?

I am thinking of a planted discus tank, optimal temperature would be around 26-28C, I think

Currently I am running a couple of 2 feets without any heating or chilling, they are still doing fine.

teong seng can import ADA tank if you book in advance. last time i asked about it. for 2 feet normal glass (not the super clear glass which costs 3 times more) it's 450. 3 feet would be at least 600-700. this is for the bare tank only.

some ppl feel worth it but a bit too expensive for me.

For the normal glass, ADA is really too expensive.....

I think I have got to redo some planning, because it seems that a chiller is really required for a big tank.

nope. normal glass ada tank is not that expensive. it's listed 9000 Yen for 2 feet normal glass ada tank. you can get even better price in some fishshop in japan. 9000 Yen equal to S$140. let's say delivering (express parcel via air) would cost around S$100. total is only S$240. the local agent margin is almost 100% if i am correct.

Anyway I went to Systems to inquire about Bioplast tanks... They are more expensive than Juwels, it seems.

I guess the Bioplasts are out of my list of choice...

Maybe it is time I start asking about custom made tanks....

In this hobby of planted tank recently (about 2 months now) and custom made a 3ft tank from local LFS. Now a bit regretted...

If I have to do it overall again, I will invest the best equipment can afford because everything on planted aquarium is about presentation. Right? So naturally, ADA product is the best. I am convinced after brought a ADA Design 2004 catalog.

Go for the best, you'll not regret later. By the way, I did not work for ADA but plan to collect their series of product one by one....

May be go to Japan to shop, haha!

Ultimately it is still whatever you put in the tank that counts ...
and that is something money cannot buy.

or at least if u have enough money to invite mr amano over to help u scape ur tank that is

........
