I'm sure we all have experienced fishes jumping out of the water. I want to ask if you do cover your tank and if so, with what material so that you

    a. don't block or degrade the intensity of your lights
    b. facilitate air exchange

    TIA.

I use glass but hate the stains left on it by water bubbles...splashes.

Never experience fish jumping out of tank before. Maybe because my tank is fully planted, thus many space for fish to hide when necessary.

I placed black egg crates on all of my tanks. The aquarium lights 'sit' on top of it for the added weight.

But this type of cover only applicable to fishes larger than the holes on these crates.

PVC pipe as frame and PVC netting those square one 1cm by 1cm holes. Secure netting with cable ties. I did this back when I was rearing an arowana comm.

Really depends on what type of fish you have.

If really A and B as you required, than lpit suggestion suits you. If your fish is arowana.

For smaller fishes, think you just leave it without cover. Also suit your request on A and B.

Re: Do you cover your tank?

Not sure if it was just coincident for me but after I introduced floating plants (mainly duck weeds) the fishes stopped jumping. Maybe the duck weeds created a "visual ceiling" for these fishes. But I'm cognisant of putting these floaters sparingly so as not to block the lights for other submersed plants.

Glass is simple but more or less degrade the intensity of light.
second opinion is use mesh. Stainless steel mesh mount/sandwich on aluminum flat bar that act as frame

I use plastic "nets" too. Those white/black ones with 1cm squares.

Don't cover with plastic or glass cover fully. Will make it very warm for the fishes.

Nope, no cover for my tanks, but be prepared to have fish/ shrimp jumping out. its you're keeping expensive ones then its better to have the cover.

I don't cover my tank, but some of my fishes just disappeared suddenly. no traces of water around the tank, if it's eaten up there should be residues but nay as well... strange...

If you have yamato shrimp in the tank, it will be cleaned until no residue is left on the fish skeletal remain.
