How long will it take before my drift wood stops floating and settle nicely on my gravel?

Really depends... if the piece isn't too big, you could try boiling it and letting the wood cool in the boiled water. This has 2 effects, firstly it gets rid of lots of the tannins which typically leech into the water. Secondly, the boiling process forces the air to expand and escape from the wood. As the water/wood cools, water is drawn into the wood, thus making it sink.

If its really big, then you have to just weigh it down and let time take its course...

Weighing it down versus letting it float makes a big difference. The former is faster at making it sink.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

Which type of drift wood did you buy? The denser the wood, the easier to sink.
