    Why does my driftwood split a bit even though I just wash it? Splinters can also be seen.

    Looks like you got those softwood type driftwood (the common type sold at most LFS). Those wood naturally tend to flake off bits and splinters into the water, not much you can do about it.

    If you prefer wood that doesn't break apart when submersed, have to get those hardwood type of driftwood from LFS, they can be differentiated easily by their more rigid form (usually in a branchy pattern) and clean wood surface with no or very little loose bark. Those will not flake into bits and splinters.

    I agree. I bought a big size wood (LFS @ Seletar area) for my tank. At that time I was only concerned about prices. But now after 8 months, I see the wood become soft. It can easily break off when cleaning the tank. I bought a smaller piece from Fishy Business and their quality of wood is very good. Although pricy but worth it.
    Ps. I don't work for Fishy Business. I just like the shop and their products.
