Should be mounting the fan on hood. The hood is a piece of acrylic covering the length of the tank with a 2.5 inch gap along the length of the tank.

If there is a small gap between the hood and the tank, can try those "vortex" ducted fans with a low-profile nozzle that can be directed into the tank... like the ones from Up Aqua/Aqua World or Dymax, some examples:

There are many other brands with similar designs available at most LFS, can just shop around to find them.

I have tried those fans before and honestly they are noisy, depending on where you place them - mine was placed at the back of the tank which is against the wall and given the enclosed space the sound really is emplified hahaha.

Yeah, the ducted fans are noisy... more so due to the funnel design, it really amplify the air flow noise, like a hairdryer sound effect.

Though i have connected such fans to adjustable AC/DC 12V adaptors before, and if set at 9V or 7.5V, they become alot quieter (fan speed will also decrease too, but can still create sufficient cooling for smaller tanks).

Hood increases the temperature... better to remove it.
