Anyone using lava chips/rocks as bio filter media? They have porous surface too. Thanks.

You can try and relay the result to us.

Is this different from those lava rocks sold at local LFS?

    Re: Bio filter media

Lava rocks can be used as filte media, they are usually considered a cheaper alternative to the commercial bio-media brands... the difference is how much actual surface area there are on the lava rocks compared to commercial branded bio-media.

Most bio-media brands usually advertise their media containing many times more bio available surface area than other conventional media (ie. lava rocks, sponge mats etc), so you just have to research and see which you think is more effective for the equivalent cost and space in the filter.
