Well, if you just want to guesstimate, you still use the calculation above but start from the surface of the substrate to the surface of the water for the height calculation.
Been wondering
Personally, when i set up a new tank , the only way to measure how much water (directly through hose) in the tank is through calulation using the basic forumula (L x B x H) to get the volume of the tank. However, after going through some books and forums on setting up aquarium, it seems that the suggested method is landscaping first then add water. I seems to be doing it the other way round. The only problem that I know when doing landscaping first before adding water, is how do you know the correct volume of water in the tank with all the landscaping stuff inside. I having a 3 ft tank, and I'm not too keen on using a 10L container to pour water into the tank slowly. What suggestion does you guys have?

If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.

is there a reason why u need to calculate the volume to be so precise?? if not, taking a rough estimate of LxBxH will do... coz that will enable u to determine the kind of equipment u can get.
It does not mean that when u do up landscaping, less water is used. the volume remains the same, it is just that the volume of water is being replaced by the live rocks.

I agree with you tat the volume of water remain the same, in addition, i agree tat a rough estimate would do for most purpose, however, a rough estimate wouldnt do much good, when you are adding medication into your tank.Originally Posted by kelstorm
pending on medication, if for ick, i recommend garlic juices mixed with the food for the fishes.. it works and u dun have to worry abt ur corals.. this is because copper treatment is the most effective for ick but most deadly for corals...
apart from that, for dosing purposes, i'll base it on the estimated volume.

garlic juices as in, you squash the garlic in order to get the juices out then u mixed it with fish food, i will try that if i ever encounter such prob. Thanks for the tip.Originally Posted by kelstorm
Btw another question, do we really need a chiller for marine tank? I'm rather green in marine.
it depends on ur lightings and wat u intend to keep. some if not almost corals need temp ard 26-28 deg and usually required high intensity lightings... which will also increase the temp.. if u not using MH, fans might work for u. MH is usually tag along with Chiller coz of the temp...
