It operates on the same concept as the Twinstar systems... you can read about how such devices work in this discussion thread:

I did manage to test a set in one of my tanks some time back and while it can help to slow down algae growth in a healthy tank, if the tank conditions are unbalanced (ie. i tested it by deliberately using excessive light and adding excess nutrients), algae still grew like crazy... so its not a magic bullet.

Thanks Urban for your great information again so you have got 1 set yourself so may I know how much you bought it and what is the size of your tank.

I am thinking to get one to control green spot algae and bba if possible but of course if I switch on the lights for above 12 hours without any co2 and add in alot of fert will definitely defeat the purpose of having one. Similarly if we visit a doctor for cough and flu and yet we ourselves keep taking cold drinks and anyhow whack food haha

I actually only borrowed a friend's set to test out in a 2ft tank (it was the standard twinstar nano set), therefore was fortunate enough to not have to pay for it... it didn't work for him so he just passed it to me to try out for a while before selling it away. I remember having to scrub clean that particular twinstar unit beforehand because it was all caked in green and brown algae, haha. To be fair, his tank was those high bio-load few-plants type fish tanks placed next to a window, a perfect recipe for algae growth.

Honestly, if you hope to slow down algae growth with these devices, all i can say is it "could" help (at least it'll not do harm)... but then again, it may not make much of a difference if you already keep your tank conditions balanced in the first place anyways. So its basically another extra equipment that may or may not be necessary, so it all depends on your setup and how you run/maintain your tank. Those various algae will still bloom in your tank if they happen to get introduced into the tank along with plants and conditions are right for them to grow.

Its sort of like how some people insist that they always have to rely on using UV sterilizer to solve chronic green water problems, while others never ever encounter that issue in their tanks.

oh so conclusion is not worth to pay almost 100 bucks for a gadget like this which does not do much help to algae control and needless to say elimination if already exist in current tank.

I was quite happy when I saw this and I thought after getting this will more or less get rid of my bba and green dust, spot algae so that I can happily enjoy my plants and fishes without much hassle in maintainence and it seems is not the case
