    Hey guys.

I've just rekindled with an old interest and decided to setup an Iwagumi kind of scapes for shrimp keeping. Got a 2ft Crystal Tank and 4kgs of rocks from Seaview.
Bumped into a fellow dude, an avid 'shrimper', and told me not to use the rocks as it makes the water hard.

Question is, anyone familiar with the rocks Seaview is selling? My guess is Granite. Those grey ones.

And i'm not shrimp keeping till like siao. Just for display purposes, and getting a few hardy shrimps. Does it matter?

    TIA!

Will post pics soon after I monitor the water I put the rocks in and after finalising my scape-ing.

    Re: Rocks

if you just want to have cherry shimps or malayan shrimps then does not really matter, they are not as sensitive as CRS.

Most rocks do increase the hardness, get soil that can reduce hardness like ADA soil.

    Hey Robert.

    Thanks for the prompt reply!

Yeap! I'm using ADA Amazonia Aqua Soil and Power Sand.

    Re: Rocks

The best way to find out if the rocks affect the water parameters is to pre-test them by soaking the rocks in a container of water and measuring if there are any parameter changes over a period of time... or just adding them directly to your tank and then tracking the parameter changes.

The number of rocks and the ratio of rocks to water volume will also affect the speed and extent of parameter changes.

For most shrimps, even sensitive species, it could be possible for them to adapt to different water parameters as long as the changes are slow and gradual. It's usually when the changes are too quick and the shrimps cannot adapt in time which results in high mortality rates.
