Hey i'm planning to upgrade my puffer fish tank into a bigger, simple 2 ft tank. I've got the tank and filter and lights, and i'm short of the decorations in it.
I got some questions, are planted plants fine with sand? if not, what base should I use? And the plants I was hoping to get are those tall ones so it would occupy more height space. And oh, I'm gonna be converting to brackish. I drew an illustration, what do you think?

Based on your sketches, if you're just going for Java fern and moss tied to driftwood, sand is fine. Note that Java fern should not be planted into the substrate. They are usually tied to driftwood and that's how most LFS sell them.
