Using Eheim 2217 Impeller on Eheim 2215

Found this on other forums. This was done a long time ago, and the thread eventually became mindless discussions without a proper conclusion.

Both impellers are exactly the same size, except the 2215 impeller has 3 blades, while the 2217 impeller has 6 blades. Initial tests are positive, with the 2215 retrofitted with 2217 impeller getting roughly 20-30gph more.

Has anyone actually been doing this? I am fairly interested, but just want to know if it prematurely stresses the pump. The 2215 so far is fine for a 2ft planted tank, but more flow can't hurt if i intend to add a chiller.

I guess it should be okay.
technically ehiem should be using the same materials for both impeller and the operating conditions would therothically be better with 6 over 3 blades in my opinion .

As far as I know from reading various forums, 2211 and 2213 impeller are interchangeable while 2215 and 2217 are also interchangeable too! But not sure between 2213 and 2215, are the impeller swappable?

As far as i know the 2213 and 2215 impellers are different sized. So far, not been seeing any negative reports on those who choose to run with bigger impellers as the flow rate even with a bigger impeller without media is just marginally over the advertised flow rate. With media factored in and running and oversized impeller, flow rate is below advertised.

Might be tempted to try that, just doing a bit more research to ensure that the motor is identical in the 2215 and 2217. All things being similar (motor, impeller), the 2217's higher flow rate might simply be due to the size of the tubings.

Just wondering, i'd assume the motors are different in the 2215 and 2217, as their watt draw are different based on listed specs, ie. 2215 (15 watts) vs 2217 (20 watts).

Perhaps the additional impeller blades in the 2217 increase resistance, so more motor power is needed to compensate for it? I'm just guessing, will need a electrical/mechanical engineering expert to chime in on this.

I've heard of people trimming their filter impellers to reduce flow, so i understand that increasing more impeller blades and their surface area will increase flow, just not sure whether that adds more strain on the motor, which was designed to operate with a certain flow rate.

My understanding so far is that the motor operate at a constant rpm due to it being design that way, only that by adding an impeller with more blade, does the performance increase. But I believe the 2211and 2215 benefit more from using 2213 and 2217 impeller unless you want to have a lower flow rate due to a smaller sized tank and getting a new canister filter is out of the budget. Theoretically, a lower flow rate would expose the filter media more to the tank water as the contact time is longer in the larger canister filter. With a lower flow rate, fish waste and solid particle might settle down at the bottom of the canister filter.

I am remembering now that the Professional Series impeller is interchangeable too! The 2222, 2224, 2226 and 2228.

There are loads of impellers on the alibaba /aliexpress sites, many are common /OEM components...aqua shops in Hk carry them too.
get the right spec and buy a few to try/for spares...internet buying can save $$
