Just install a cheap single tap along the siphon hose, then you can open and close it anytime to control the flow.

Anyways, i have seen those battery operated gravel vacuums at various LFS, maybe you can check at places like Seaview or C328.

C328 has them; I'm currently using them during water changes. Right side of shop when you enter, on top hanging near where the nana petite et al. containers are located. Costs about less than $20, C battery operated, cream in colour.

The battery operated one are rubbish, dont waste you 20 dollars.Just use a hose,
you dont have to squeeze the hose you can actually bend it to shut the flow or reduce the flow.
Too bad you stay in bukit batok if you stay around my place i can sell you my 12mm 1.5mm thick hose that
is awesome for vacuuming dirt, with the thin wall i actually use my foot to reduce the flow..

Eheim Quick Vac pro might be the answer. It cleans gravels though, so not sure if it works ok for soil substrate.

C328 had it the last month I checked. But this baby is not cheap, around $80-$90 bucks and it is not that slim either. So for nano tanks or heavily plants tanks, might not be so useful.

    Re: Aquarium Vacuum Cleaner

Yeah, my exact thought for an equipment just to suck out/clean out gravels. I was shocked when C328 boss told me the cost while I was holding that big stick in my hands.

Not saying that I will not eventually get it but I am scouting out for cheaper alternatives now.

Other than that, this does seem like a useful piece of toy as you don't need to gather pails and siphon in and out just to clean the substrate.

I am only running a nano tank, so it seems overkill to get this thing. Maybe when I get a bigger set-up and this investment seems more worthwhile.

Get a small, 2nd hand canister filter, stuff it with filter wool to grab the detritus from your tank. Vacuum the tank with this setup.
