    Hi all,

I have recently got myself a TDS meter. I have tested it on my 3 tanks. They are at 180, 185 and 372 on the reading.

What is the best TDS reading for any planted tank? I plan to keep the easier shrimps and tiny danios in the tanks

    Re: Ideal TDS range?

TDS that range between 100-200 are usually ideal for planted tanks and most softwater fishes and shrimps that are commonly kept in our aquariums. Its okay to be slightly higher or lower (tanks with higher bio-loads and/or alot of fertilizers added tend to have higher TDS), as most hardy fishes and shrimps can adapt to different TDS levels.

The most important thing is to ensure that any changes in TDS are slow and gradual so that the livestock have time to acclimate to it.

These data/stats are for reference only. In Hydroponic,
TDS value of 350 to 500 were target value for growing tomato. Betta splendens seem to survive at that level.

I guess you are referring to aquaponics? TDS of 350-500ppm seems too low for hydroponics... that sounds more like for aquaponics (TDS levels are usually kept lower for livestock safety).

I've dabbled in hydroponics before and the nutrient solutions that run though those systems are maintained at very high TDS (>1,000+ ppm), the entire solution is basically fertilizers anyways. TDS meters are the common ways to test if overall nutrients are sufficient in hydroponic setups. It definitely requires way more nutrients to quickly grow nice juicy tomatoes.

UA, yeah TDS value were kind of magic number, my hydroponic became aquaponic as mosquito started to take hold...over time, algea, choked pipe and NEA etc were all headspinners.
anyway TDS meter was a great way to tell the level of Dissolved Solids or Fertiliser that we added into the water.
