Canister for 50 gal planted tank

Hi,

Planning to setting up a 50 gal planted tank soon.

As my previous setup all using IOS or hang on filter so this will be my 1st tank that will running a canister filter.

Would like to check with you guys which canister filter suitable for a 50 gal tank?

Planning to connect the canister to chiller too.

You could look at the Eheim 2217 (aka Classic 600)... it should be sufficient for a 50 gallon tank. Just have to get a pair of double-taps to make maintenance easier.

If you have the budget, can also consider larger canister filter models with even higher flow rates. Its always better to get more flow, then you have more options to adjust lower if necessary.

I've had both the Classic 2217 & Professional 2228.

The professional has extra features such as priming, nice media baskets, flow rate indicators & built in connectors. Nice to have but not worth the extra money. The priming feature got stuck after some time. The quick release broke once. The filter was placed inside the cabinet & I never looked at the flow rate indicators to see if 'flow has reduced due to dirt build up'.

I preferred the 2217 & would recommend it just like UA mentioned.
Just get double taps (for convenience) & $2 media nets.

Yeah, the Pro series models have more features and come with built-in taps (so you don't have to buy those separately), but they generally cost more than the Classic series models... so it all depends on your budget and whether you find the extra features useful.

The 2217 is suitable and the flow rate should still be okay when connected to a chiller, but as mentioned before if you have the budget, go for even higher flow filters so that you have more flexibility in adjusting the flow. You can consider the higher flow Pro series filters.

If your tank eventually becomes very densely planted and you find the need to have more filtration and circulation, you can just add another canister filter to the tank, have 2 filters running concurrently.

As for chiller, go for the 1/4 HP chiller, it will work more efficiently and cool more effectively.

I guess you'll probably sort of get the message by now... if you can afford it, anyways go for larger and more powerful equipment. It all depends on your budget.

Was told that new vendor/filters will be displayed at aquarama next week.
Filters designed for Ease of Maintenance that enable 'no spill' removal of cover (for cleaning media) without power off the pump is nice to have feature.

Many filters have come and gone, but the Eheim classic filters remain. The bells and whistles touted by the vendors are additional touches. However, the more parts, higher possibility of it failing. I use a 2217 for my 120L tank. If you think you need something more, you can always use 2 canisters instead. Maybe 2217 and a 2215. Definitely enough.

For a tank dimension of 45 x 30 x 30. Is eheim 2213 too powerful ?
Mine seems to be blowing my tetras away but my shrimps are not affected =X

An Eheim 2213 is suitable for a 45x30x30 tank... while having higher flow rate is always better (more turnover of water means more water is filtered and usually better circulation, 10x turnover rate is a common target but can be higher or lower depending on tank setup), other factors like outflow positioning, efficient circulation and distribution patterns also play an important role in reducing deadspots in the tank.

You can spread out the current by using a rainbar aiming across the tank, or directing it against the tank wall to reduce current, or widening the output holes.

Another alternative is to use wide mouth design lily pipes, those spread out the flow to a wider area and generate a gentler current. There are even lily pipes with "bubble" or "spin" designs (do a google seach on those) which can further reduce the overall current while still maintaining maximum flow rate.

If the overall flow rate is still way too high and fishes are always fighting against the current, then installing a single or double tap on the outflow hose would allow you to reduce the flow rate to more comfortable levels.

So far, i've found the gUSH and VIV brand glass lily pipes to be good quality and well made... most importantly they are shaped correctly, not at weird/wrong angles like other brands.

You could also consider acrylic lily pipes if you have concerns with breakage and prefer something alot more durable, here is a version ordered from online that i reviewed a while back that is quite good:
