buy another 2nd hand one from market place.

I don't get it - what is the problem?

lets have a kind of brainstorming![]()
proposal 1:
- new tank should be almost empty (no water)
- pump 90% of the water from old tank into the new one
- move the filter from old tank to new one as is (without cleaning of the media)
- move shrimps from old tank to new one

So new tank, new soil, old water, old filter old media then shrimp in?

If your existing filter has been running for a while and is well established with a strong beneficial bacterial population, it should be able to instantly handle the bio-load in the new tank. Note that this is assuming the new tank is using shrimp soil substrate or inert substrate that does not release excessive ammonia during initial setup.
On the otherhand, if you are using planted tank soil (aka ADA aquasoil) in the new tank, then the existing filter will need extra time to convert the released ammonia in the new tank before you can shift the livestock over (it may take a few days to a week or two for it to re-cycle again). If thats the case, then you may want to put a 2nd sponge filter or hang-on filter into the current tank first to build up some beneficial bacteria, then when you setup the new tank, both old and new tanks can have a mature filter working in them during the transition process.
Cool thanks

In your scenario, what I would do is to setup the new tank without the filter (meaning only soil and water inside). Then i will put some of the dirt from the established filter into the new tank to seed the soil with beneficial bacteria. After which throw in some floaters like hornwort and salvinia, and aerate the water using an air line. About 1-2 weeks later, if ammonia readings are low, you can probably move your shrimps and filter over to the new tank.
Cool idea too, thanks
