Is it true that ANS lily pipe is made of acrylic whereas VIV is made of glass? Any differences in terms of functionality and form factor?

From what i've seen, both ANS and VIV lily pipes are made from glass.

Did you happen to find acrylic pipes labelled as ANS brand?

I too, have not seen any ANS acrylic ones. Mainly glass. I believe however, ANS finishing and quality may be poorer than the VIV ones

I think this http://www.eastoceansg.com/ans-opti-...mm-p-1818.html ANS inlet pipe with built-in surface skimmer has an acrylic top part. but the rest of the piping is glass.

I'm using the inflow lily pipe from them, the cheapest I can find so far. As it is only for inflow, it shouldn't make a difference. Serving its purpose well so far.

For outflow I already have one from other brands. From its look, seem ok but still have to use it then one will know.

I think thats the cheapest brand i saw from LFS too.
But there isnt any reviews/comparisons so far.
From web images, the outflow pipe looks similar in design, built quality wise... dunno,

Tried and tested by bro UA is the VIV brand and the acrylic ones from ebay.

Still thinking which way to go..

Do you really need a glass lily?

Depends on individual needs and wants although some bought it without knowing if they really need it but they just want it.

UA has mentioned about the pros and cons of glass vs acrylic.
I dont think i need a glass lily. But i dont see LFS carry acrylic ones.

Correct me if i am wrong, i think lily outflow is better than the generic outflow from Eheim as CO2 gets better distributed, esp. to the bottom of the tank.
It doesnt mean that one will fail with the generic outflow. Lily outflow is a luxury item that helps increase the success rates.

Not really needed, there are add-on plastic wide-mouth attachments available from Eheim too...

    Photo from Google Images.

... but glass lily pipes do look alot nicer than green plastic pipes.

    Sorry for being a noob...
Does the Eheim lily work as well? Did you try before?
The shape doesnt seem anywhere close to the glass ones.
Doesnt lily shape affect performance ?

I've not used it personally, but i have seen it being used in another person's tank before, the shape of the outflow is a more squarish style, but it does at least generate a wider/gentler flow pattern than the original eheim narrow pipe outlet. There are joints which allow it to be adjustable to different angles, so there is some flexibility in its usage.

Found a video of it in use:

Overall, it could do a "similar" job as a glass lily pipe... just that it doesn't look as nice, still got green parts.

Yes, the shape and angle of the lily pipe outlet does affect the flow pattern and current... nowadays there are many different designs in the market (some create fast focused currents, while some create slow diffused currents), so just have to pick the ones which match your requirements.

Saw this at seaview $24. In my opinion, not worth it. Rather buy the acrylic lily pipe.

Re: VIV and ANS Outflow Lily Pipes

The reason I asked is that, in the pursuit of achieving a look or function, we tend to forget that we could use something different to achieve the same result, diffusing the water flow coming out from the canister filter outlet pipe. But if funds are not the issue, then carry on with the purchase and use. I am afraid that newbie who are following this thread think they need to have all the equipment and accessories in this hobby. If they cant have due to budget, I fear we are alienating a group away from the real intention of this hobby.

    Just highlighting a thought though.
