Hi I have an eheim 2228 that I have used for a number of years (about 5) and the flow rate is pretty slow, like a weak tap. I doubt it's dirt as my pipes can still be seen through, and I've cleaned the filter pads and the impeller housing and its contents. Have any of you encountered the impeller slowing down over time and know how I may remedy it?
    Many thanks.

Could be the magnet on the impellar is weak? Do you have a new spare to compare?

    Re: Eheim 2228 flow rate

Have you checked if your impeller shaft is damaged? I'm also using a Eheim 2228. Just fired it up again today for my new 2ft tank after staying in the store room for 15 years. BTW, I bought it in Feb 1997 when I was rearing Discus in a 4ft tank. It is still working like new. :-) Besides the internal filter medias, the hose, the only other thing I've changed is that rubber washer surrounding the head unit.

I checked, it's not damage. The magnet may be an issue though! I think I will get one to compare. Stream, I think one difference is that mine has been used consistently all those while..

Check with C328... or head directly to Qian Hu, they are the distributors and have all the spare parts for the filters.

    Re: Eheim 2228 flow rate

Ok I have replaced impeller, checked for kinks, tested without prefilter and media, and checked pipes for clogs. Yet the flow rate remains rather weak compared to videos I see online. Does anyone have any advice for this frustrated aquarist? =/

How high is your tank from the base of the filter? There is a height limit of 180cm if I remember correctly.

Less than 100cm. Thanks though I doubt height is the issue here =/

If the impeller is replaced and it is still slow... then it sounds like your motor might be worn out/faulty and only working at slower speed. I guess the next step is to change the motor.

    Re: Eheim 2228 flow rate

Personally, I'd prefer a flow rate that is not too fast for the tank. I tend to think that the bacteria colonies within a filter will not be tolerant of a fast flowing current which can upset or hinder the optimal conditions for survival of the micro organisms.

Mystikboy, could it be a different impeller was inserted into the canister filter?

    Re: Eheim 2228 flow rate

Maybe a lower model impeller was used instead of the original one, probably a 2226 or lower model?

Mystikboy, why not you sent the filter to Qian hu for servicing. Let them solve it for you.
