Anyone tried planting onions/garlic in their tank?

Wonder if such plants help to remove infections from the water (given that onions/garlic are sort of anti-bacterial), but they might kill some stuff which might be beneficial for the fishes too?

I kept those types of bulb-based plants in my tank before... they are not actually "onions" (onions are different species and terrestrial), its just that they have similar method of growth so people give them those nicknames. They don't actually offer the same benefits of real onions or garlic.
