Have been keeping Sakura for many years in an acrylic 2 feet tank. The colony isn't thriving, but I still get >100 mixed Sakura and wild coloured cherry living in the same tank as I can't bear to cull them just because they are ugly.
Today upon returning from an overseas trip, I was horrified to find my living room flooded! The tank has leaked! After spending several hours cleaning up the mess (some of my furniture are still wet), I think the time to give up has come. With my bio filter and tank gone, I don't think I want to start again.
The problem is, what to do with my mixed bag of shrimps that survived the leak? Giving away is not permitted in market place, and I can't bear to flush them down the toilet bowl. Can some kind souls give me some suggestions please?
Sell or trade them to LFS, or just give them to schools or those childcare centers...
dun release them in our long kangs!
there are many more platforms to sell other then AQ... facebook also can sell
Just treat it as an expensive hobby.![]()
LIFE IS UNBEARABLE WITHOUT A FISH TANK!!!
Some ppl willing to adopt just to feed their fishes ! Beware of that.
Hahaha, but I think it is not advisable to feed fish with live shrimps because of their sharp shells and snouts.
Previously when I had my precious Luohan fish, I used to feed it with freeze-dried shrimps.
That is okay because when freeze-dried or sun-dried, they sre very brittle and easily crunched inside the fish's mouth.
But live shrimps are bad because their hard snouts will poke the fishes' throats and injure their stomachs & intestines,
causing sickness and gradual death. I always feel for the fish when they are suffering.![]()
LIFE IS UNBEARABLE WITHOUT A FISH TANK!!!
My angelfish and dwarf gourami very smart. I ever try one Malayan shrimp, they finish it within few second and spit out the hard shell of the Malayan shrimp. Hehe, they love it.
Thanks for the replies. I have read of horror stories of tanks leaking or cracking when owners are away, now I have experienced it. Damage is controlled, but the phobia will keep me away from this hobby for a while, else I cannot leave home in peace.
For fish with small mouths it is okay to feed them shrimps because the shrimp's snout is too big for them to swallow anyway.
But for big mouthed gentle fish like big goldfish, when they gulp and swallow the whole shrimp, their mouths and intestines are bound to be injured.
Of course rough fish like Oscars and piranhas, etc couldn't care a damn as they can even eat baby hedgehogs.![]()
LIFE IS UNBEARABLE WITHOUT A FISH TANK!!!
Having a leaking tank is a very painful experience especially when tank is very old and the silicone started to give way.
You may want to consider a plastic tank instead, free from leaking. It comes in big size too. You may want to take a consideration if you still have a passion in this hobby.

Many lfs do carry them. Just ask them. The biggest that I ever come across was about 2ft in length.

The only way for a tank to be leak-proof is to be seamless I guess. Yet to see such a tank other than those used by QH for catching longkang fish.
Meanwhile, withdrawal symptom has set in.
Those "guppy brand" plastic tanks are really useful... i have a bunch of them for use as quarantine or temporary holding tanks (which often end up as more permanent tanks). They are light weight, durable and easy to clean. When not in use can be stacked up and take less space in storage.
Ideal for those suffering from multiple tank syndrome. Just pull out a plastic tank, fill with aquarium water, shift over an established filter, add in nice fishes that were hastily bought from LFS due to itchy fingers... symptoms abated (at least for a few days).![]()
