Thank you ! Is it safe for drinking? Just curious ! Wondering 1 stage what is the TDS reading.
You need only the media to filter the water, diy the container.
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.
Don't walk behind me as I might not lead, don't walk in front of me as I might not follow. Walk beside me, as my friend.
Mohamad Rohaizal is my name. If it's too hard, use BFG. I don't mind.
If the source is local tap water, it's already safe to drink anyways...after being filtered and processed by the RO/DI unit, the results should be even cleaner with no impurities or contaminants (but also no trace elements too), similar to distilled water bought from shops.
Anyone tried how to install RO unit by themselves? I am not plumber.
There are many ways / places to install the RO unit. One common method is to T off from under the sink, near the toilet bowl or from shower area.
2 spanner & white plumber tape is all you need.
1) Get a connector like this. Insert in between your pipes near the toilet bowl or sink.

2) Connect your 1/4" tube from this tap to your RO unit (inlet). It has an on/off tap on it.
3) Your RO unit will have 2 outlets.
- One for "clean water (0TDS)" - this goes to your collection container.
- One for "waste water (high TDS)" - this can either go into your drain hole. Else many folks have some pails to collect it to be used for laundry or mopping floor.
It's just a wild thought of mine.
I am sure if it is feasible or make sense.
If anyone is going for a RO unit, how about paying extra to get a plumber to install additional piping so that it is next to the fish tank, probably higher, then install the RO unit and have the OTDS outlet go straight into the tank.
This way we will save carrying bucket of water during WC especially for big tanks.
The waste water outlet is another one to think about.
But we still need to carry the bucket of water from the tank unless there is a long PVC pipe to siphon it out to the toilet.
from 14L to 8L tank.
Thats what some of the lucky chaps do (those with budget and space), its the dream setup for most aquarists... custom piping work to and from the tanks, can fully automate the water top up and and water change routine. Simply schedule the system to do everything automatically, no need to even get hands wet.![]()
Just got a 2stage for under $100 from China, yet to setup and test. Will update over the weekend

Yeah, with such custom piping setups, can even do perpetual water change system... the pipes are designed to constantly trickle fresh clean processed water into the tank 24/7 while the excess water automatically exits through the overflow out to the drain. Keeps the water parameters super stable.
Definitely a dream setup indeed.![]()
That's a single stage DI which is quite similar to what I bought from a shop at Joo Chiat (Ultrapure) for around the same price. I chose not to install but bought an adapter to hook up to my kitchen sink tap (which already has a 2 stage sediment and carbon filter for drinking) only when I need to use it.
My experience with this particular product from Ultrapure was that it brings down the TDS to zero but do be warned that it expires pretty quickly. Had to buy a replacement cartridge costing about $60 after about 12 water changes for my 2 feet tank as TDS slowly crept up.
Yeah, the main running costs of RO/DI units are the cartridge replacements... so have to compare their lifespans and calculate the overall cost of usage.
Its like printers, they are cheap to buy initially, but the ink or toner cartridges cost a bomb.![]()
True that UA, that's why now I stock up on Life distilled. I hardly do WC nowadays anyway.
Wa.. Now back to distilled water. So which one more worth it? Hahha, i feel guilty keep throwing away empty bottle.
You'll just have to calculate your usage and see which method is better... for small tanks, using bottled distilled water is probably more economical (since the amount of water used is less anyways), while for larger tanks or those with many tanks, using RO/DI would usually work out cheaper over time.
