Brown algae has been growing on the intake pipe of my hang-on back filter for a while. I also see it on the tank surfaces and it can be easily brushed off.
Is it necessary to get rid of the algae completely or it is harmless? The intake pipe is narrow and has a U-shaped turn on the top, I will need to figure out how to clean it if necessary.
I have shrimp, ramshorn and a small pleco for algae eaters.
The brown algae is usually diatoms, they are harmless and easily cleaned away.
You can add in some otocinclus, they love to eat brown algae diatoms, so can help you clear it.
To clean the inside walls of the intake pipe, you can buy a long flexible pipe brush that is commonly available at most good LFS, just make sure you buy the right size brush which fit your intake pipe's inner diameter.
