Hi guys, anyone using the wire mesh storage rack as your tank "stand"? I was thinking to get a metal stand for 2ft. But saw some people using this, can keep a few tanks some more. Will it be strong and sturdy enough?

    Wire mesh storage rack

There may be some concerns with rusting in the long run due to direct (sort of) exposure to water. I stay in the East with sea breeze and the rusting on stuff is quite rampant. Nonetheless it might just work! Maybe additional coat of paint can aid the endeavor.

    Re: Wire mesh storage rack

I use those type of wire shelving for the tanks in my storeroom. The ones i got have black epoxy coating so they are somewhat water resistant (meant for use in damp areas). Been using them for the past 2+ years and all still working well, no visible rust so far.

You just need to make sure the max. load specs for each shelf is more than sufficient to hold the tank weight. Also invest in thicker base mats for the tanks as the wire shelves tend to be abit uneven, need more base support so that the tanks are kept level.

Structurally, it may be suitable for just one 2ft tank at the lower levels, but not more than one.

This is because the material is not designed to hold such heavy loads as full aquarium tanks for long term use.

For multiple tanks (2 or more), I would definitely get a solid cast iron stand. In fact, I am in the process of looking for one.

    Re: Wire mesh storage rack

Hi guys thanks for all the reply. Actually I'm not too worry about rush, it could rust a little bit over time but wouldn't affect too much on the function. The max load per level range from 50-80kg, depends on the quality of the shelf. 2ft tank filled with water and rocks probably around 70kg. It's within the limit but pushing to the max already.
The biggest concern I have is whether it will topple over or not...I have a 10month boy learning to walk at home.

I think I better don't take the risk, gonna find a cabinet. If using metal stand also risky, my boy could also grab the leg and start shaking.

Wire shelving probably good for 1.5ft and below. Thanks again everyone.

Maybe you could double up on the shelving, add another shelf below the ones taking the load.

Yeah, those type of metal wire shelving do tend to be abit wobbly due to the modular structure... so far i've mainly used them for holding multiple 1ft or 1.5ft or low-profile 2ft tanks and equipment, at most 40-50kg of tank weight per shelf (at max. rated load of 100kg per shelf).

The shelves i use have heavy duty caster wheels too, so i'm still able to move them (even with filled up tanks), but have to be done very slowly to avoid spillage. I find them most suitable for breeding rack setups that use multiple small tanks.

I guess if you have a child in the home who may pull or shake the metal shelving, the water in the tanks will slush around like mini tsunami and flood the floor... so it'll be better to use a more solid fixed structure stand or cabinet instead.

And also do invest and a good quality one, the thing holding the shelves up are the plastic inserts so a good quality one will surely be able to hold the weight and the plastic part is last likely to degrade over time.

You can make the rack less wobbly by having a few more shelves. (1 close to bottom , 1-2 feet add another layer and last one all the way at the top)

    Re: Wire mesh storage rack

For 2ft cabinets, they can fit into the backseat of a small car, no need to fold down seats or anything. Still relatively easy to carry and transport around.

If you don't have a car, then just take a taxi.

    Re: Wire mesh storage rack

just prepare some empty boxes to put on the rear seat to prevent damaging the seats (fabric or synthetic leather )
