catappa leaves

Been to the Labrador park this morning and saw a lot leaves on the ground that resemble those catappa leaves that i hv bought from c328 [the $1 per pack type].
I hv tried the ocean-free sachet and it works wonder on my cardinals. They look so much better. But it is difficult to control the dosage with the sachet. The water is too brown. So i bought the $1 pack and put in about half a leave a time.

Pardon my ignorance. But if those leaves at Labrador are really catappa leaves, then perhaps i should rinse those from the $1 pack more thoroughly before i put them in. Checked with the lady owner at c328 when i first bought it and she said it need not be washed.

And what a waste sweeping them away....

peter, the tree is everywhere, if you know where to look. opposite my place 2 trees

if you worry about over staining your tank, perhaps you can soak in a pail and add what you need into the tank

I came across and article about preparing ketapang leaves before, but I can't find it. Try searching the arowana forums.

Yes, I remembered distinctly the Ketapang trees at Labardo park. They are right at the end of the park before the beach.

it is even available at the car park.
The leaves were dropping onto my car as i parked Freshly dropped and uncontaminated

now i actually rinse it thoroughly with tap water before put it in tank or filter.

if i remembered correctly--

have to pour boiling water over the collected leaves to kill any bacteria/pathogens/parasites on the leaves
and leave it for a while then rinse with clean water
then sun it till it's totally dry and crispy before using it....
even when it's freshly dropped there's still a chance that it might be polluted by the environment(pesticides,fumes from vehicles etc)
so it may be worthwhile to treat the leaves before using it

yes, good point by Nanami, to be safe, always wash thoroughly before dumping into your tank.

OT: I used to rear caterpillars and my neighbour has lots of host plant.. never once I wash them. But happen a certain 'rare' species I bought back die for no reason. Conclusion could be due to pesticides or fumes from cars, since the tree is beside the road
