My tank was recently affected by thread algae. I heard yamatos eat it but am unsure if the current rcs and otos in the tank will eat them.

I think there are 2 types of thread algae in the tank. One sticks on surfaces and is very short, the other type is very one and runs everywhere.

Any advice and help is greatly appreciated, thanks

Otos will not eat thread algae, they help eat the soft green or brown film algae and bio film on tank glass and leaves instead.

Cherry shrimps do eat thread algae but each shrimp will only eat abit so you will need alot of them to have a noticeable effect... literally an army of them to work at it. Other types of shrimps like malayan shrimps or red nose shrimps also do a similar job too.

Amano/yamato shrimps are much larger in size compared to cherry shrimps, so they more strength to pluck at the algae and are able to consume much more of it too. In terms of "algae eating power", i would rank 1 full-sized amano shrimp = 10 cherry shrimps. So either stock a platoon of amano shrimps or an army of cherry shrimps.

I've found that using a combination of anti-algae treatment (personally i use Easy Life AlgExit) to inhibit and weaken the algae + an army of shrimps to eat the weakened algae + reducing excess light levels, is one of the best methods to clear up thread algae in a tank.
