[IMG][/IMG]Hey guys, so the last adult of my Fire Red Shrimps just died on me(Probably old age). Now my tank holds about 20 fire red shrimplets and 2 otos. (Salvaged the shrimplets about 1 month back)
So I was thinking of using this batch of shrimplets to re-populate my tank.
Some of the shrimplets have developed the egg sadle just above their heads, so I would assume they are ready to breed!
Any tips to ensure that the shrimps will breed?Attachment 49869

What is your current water parameter? KH,GH,PH, temperature?

Unfortunately I did not purchase a test kit to test my water parameters. My tank's temp is about 27-28 degrees via a fan

For RCS, clean water conditions and stable parameters (no sudden fluctuations), along with ample food source, will usually encourage good breeding rates.

I do 20% wc weekly along with feeding them SERA crabs natural pellets daily. My water is super clear but my previous batch of adult fire reds did not breed . There was an exception tho, one of my tiger shrimps(before i kept fire reds) got berried. However she dropped her eggs and after about 2 weeks, died.

Well, just doing weekly water changes and seeing clear water doesn't necessarily mean the parameters are safe or stable... the ammonia and nitrate levels might still be through the roof and water parameters could be fluctuating like crazy in such setups.

Unfortunately, just looking at the tank water isn't the same as measuring it with actual test kits. Without testing the water parameters its all mostly just guesswork.

True, any idea where I can invest in a test kit? Those all-in-one type.

You can get the API Freshwater Master Test Kit... it tests for ammonia, nitrite, nitrates and high/low range pH.

For shrimp keeping, you may also want to get the API GH Test Kit (to measure mineral levels).

A TDS meter will also be useful as a regular follow-up quick check to ensure that there are not unusual increases in parameters and if you want to monitor the effectiveness of water changes (if the TDS levels spike up or keeps increasing, its a sign to check the other parameters to find out if there are any issues).

Try not to get the paper test strip versions as they are not as accurate and consistent in terms of measurement results.

How much do you think I would need to set aside for all these kits?

The API Freshwater Master Test Kit is around $50 (can shop around to find LFS promos that may be cheaper). The API GH Test Kit is around $10+. TDS Meter is around $15.
