Hi guys, there is an old thread about using LED flood light for planted tank. Just curious anyone is using it now and how's the result? I'm going to Hong Kong later this year and thinking to buy 10 watt LED flood light from taobao, it's very cheap. Color temperature declared as 6000-6500k. 10watt enough for 2ft cube tank? Please share your thoughts... thanks

Serious? 50 Watt for 1ft? That's really crazy man...haha... I don't plan to have too high demand plants.. so probably I will go for 1x 30 Watt...do u think it's OK for normal setup?

I used a 10W LED floodlight for a 1ft/10 liter nano tank before, just hardy low-tech plants like anubias and mosses in it (no Co2 injection) and it worked well.
For a 2ft cube tank, i would think you'll probably need much higher wattage lights... since the tank will be much taller and wider (the tank is 60cm x 60cm x 60cm right?), i'd assume 50W or even higher (maybe even 2 sets of 50W) might be needed to get sufficient light to the plants. I guess you'll just have to try and see.
Anyways, if the lights end up to be too strong, you can simply mount them higher to reduce the intensity (you'll need to DIY or buy a stand to mount and adjust it though).
good to have higher then insufficient light...
Hi fireblade and UA, thanks for your advise. I will get a higher wattage since the price difference is small, and update after setup.
If you want to see how those LED floodlights work and how they are mounted, can check at the Unicell shop at Sim Lim Sq level 2... their LED section sells the same types of LED floodlights (at higher local prices though), but you can have a look see and get an idea of the units sizes and shapes.
LED floodlights are alot more chunky/box-like than strip LED lights, so you'll need to factor in the extra vertical space it takes up, especially if you plan to use it in a rack system with limited height space.
Ya, flood light is bulky. Thought of using LED strip as well but afraid that not enough to penetrate to bottom of tank. Saw someone else says that higher power LED do better in penetration, strip LED is about 3 Watt per piece only I think...

Yeah, it all depends on your tank setup and height... if its taller, then need higher powered LEDs.
The LED floodlights are actually a good option for your tank dimensions, because you'll definitely need much higher intensity light to get through the 60cm height of tank.
OK, saw your another thread that recommends 3watt LED for depth >1.5ft

Yeah, nowadays there are even LED lights that use 5W individual LEDs and some even using 7W individual LEDs, those are designed for taller tanks or to be mounted higher above the tank.
Here is an example from East Ocean website: http://www.eastoceansg.com/odyssea-m...pcs-p-883.html

Ya, if buy from taobao, including shipping around $25. 30 plus to buy locally probably is a better idea.
By the way, it's not really 2ft cube, actual dimensions 60*40*56. A tank set bought from fellow hobbyist here...
