I encounter similar issue before and later found out it was missing a small rubber ring seal which should be misplaced when I was cleaning the canister.

My eheim 2028 was working fine till I decommed it. After 3 weeks when I tried to do a demo for a prospective buyer it was just unable to suck in the water from the pail that was placed above the filter (similar height as my tank). Although I could hear a lot of rumbling sound coming out of the canister it was unable to suck in the water to the filter. Left at this state for about 20 mins to allow for purging of air. Still no change and decided to pack up.
Anyone can offer some troubleshooting tips?.

Could be the impeller spoilt.. Take out and if can use super glue to glue it otherwise get a replacement...

Took out the impeller to check. Looks fine and able to spin when power up. See pictureIMG_0354[2].JPG

You hold the core and turn the impeller , the impeller should able to turn 1/5 round . If can turn freely mean it has detached from the core , need to glue or replace it

Sorry missed out on attachment.

Hold A , if B can turn freely mean the shaft broken. Remove C or D and take out A & B , if broken, A and B become separate pieces, (otherwise it is connected as a single piece then it is not the impeller problem ). Apply super glue into broken plastic parts found at the center. Leave it to dry for at Least an hour.

The impeller stil in one piece. Guess have to rule it out. Nevertheless have resolved the problem after coming across a suggestion from another forum site. The solution is actually quite simple. I would just like to share this piece of information for those who have problem dealing with air trap. The main problem why the cannister was unable to draw water was due to air trap in the hose. So all that was needed is to disconnect the inlet pipe from the cannister. Dip one end of the hose either into your tank or a pail of water. Suck the other open end. Once you see water flowing into the pipe quickly plug it into the cannister. All this time ensure that the outlet pipe is connected to cannister outlet and in the pail together with the inlet pipe. Now you will be able to see water bubbling even though the filter have not been powered. Wait till the bubbling stop. Now power ON. Its all system go from there on. Well almost. I still have a leaking problem to deal with in another post. Thanks for all the contributions.

The Installation Set will eliminate this problem. On its own, the canister filter will not purge air out without water in the canister and hose. It is built to move water, not air.
The 2026 main con is the so called priming pump found on top of the canister. Hard to use in confined space and when its o-ring that keep the priming pump from losing the seal wear off, good luck then. Apparently leaks happens at that area. To overcome this, I just use the Installation set for simplicity, instead of hunching in the cabinet, pumping the priming pump and getting angry at the canister itself.
Sold all of my 2026 and returning to the Classic series with the Installation Set combo.
