I think i asked before in another thread elsewhere. Maybe it would be good for new-to-shrimps people or anyone for reference.

    Tried and tested :

    Cucumber
    Zuchini
    Leafy vegetables like lettuce, etc

Wonder if anyone tried other stuffs? Do we have to cook/boil all of them?

    Onions/Scallions
Fruits (UA indicated risks of mould/fungus due to sugar content)
    Pumpkin
    Tomato
    Potato
    Spices like ginger/garlic
    Mushrooms

    Let's Discuss!

    Re: Fresh Food for Shrimps?

I have tried spinach(but always got confused by many varieties of spinach), baby carrot, pumpkin(once only) & pea(peeled skin).

-Carrot gotta boil till soft and let it sit in the tank for 1 day or less before seeing shrimp eating.

-pumpkin is soft so blanch will do. My shrimp finish a small pcs in a day+.

-Pea is soft too so blanch will do. I will remove the skin of the pea. XD I am referring to the thin membrane on the pea, not the long shell holding the pea. My shrimp seem to prefer pea more.

But for pea and pumpkin, it might be a little messy. Pea will break into tiny powdery particles as the shrimp eat it, so don't mesh the pea else it will cloud the water. Pumpkin is not as bad.

Usually my shrimp are not interested in the freshly blanched veggie until it sit in the water for like 1/2 a day or more. Do you face the similar issue?? For pea, my shrimp will eat it straight away if it's soft enough.

XD For potato, the sprout/green potato is poisonous. Don't dare to take the risk even with removed sprout. Then for ginger/garlic is it kinda spicy for shrimp? =X

I usually give my shrimps the japanese type of cucumber. But since i got not that much shrimps (maybe about 20-30, mostly juveniles), i cant finish the cucumber before it start to rot in my fridge hahahaha.

Same problem for my carrot, but they are more receptive to cucumber than carrot (maybe i didnt boil long enough to soften it).

XD 1 cucmber can use for weeks. 90% of the veggie usually ended up in my stomach. I seldom feed them veggie now as it's troublesome and I always left the leftover in the freeze rotting as I forget about it. I think frozen veggie like pea is a good choice as it can be left in the freezer for long long time.

XD didn't notice much differen't cos my shrimp don't really like both unless they are rotting. =_=

    Re: Fresh Food for Shrimps?

Most of the foods in the first post needs to be boiled or blanched. I feed steamed corn(need to remove the thin membrane), broccoli and zuchini though my shrimps only go crazy for corn. A single corn kernel can last 48h in my tank as everything will be consumed and it dosen't foul the water. If you consider fresh meat as fresh food then I can say that I'll occasionally crush or deshell snails for them too.
