Whats the best way to do it without it causing my soil to be disturbed? Mine is not carpeted, the last time i shift like 5cm to the side, half the tank got cloudy
Now i considering getting a stand to put instead of on my bay window.
Drain out 80-90% of the water, only leave 1-2cm of water above the substrate, then slowly lift and shift the tank to another location (best to get another person to help carry it with you)... i've done that a few times when re-positioning my tank stands and rack arrangements, minimal issues with tank layout.

I have shifted my 2ft tank many times in that manner.
When you pour back the water into the tank, you need to put a bowl or saucer above the substrate and slowly pour the water on to the bowl with a scoop.
If you just pour it in without a bowl or sauce, the substrate will also fly all over. The trick is to do it very slowly.

I don't know how you guys can cope with tank shifting. I'll most likely change location only after decomm in the future. A friend of mine used the method UA suggested; he even carried his 3 feet tank alone! +10 respect to all past, current and future tank shifters.
left 10-20% water, if i subsequently top up with aged water, will my shrimps be in shock? Or i just siphon the water and store it in a pail and then i put it back after moving ?
Hehe when I do my rescaping. I left 10% water with the shrimp inside. I just plant it. Then later refill back with all the water.
Yeah, just store the existing tank water in a few large buckets and then refill them back into the tank after the move is done. Can also take the opportunity to do a water change too.
Aquarists usually have a stack of big buckets hidden inside their storerooms.
I got 3. 2 for storing and aging water. One for taking water out from tank :P

So will the small opening of the jerrycans make process of aging water longer, given their small opening? I age mine using just pails.
Yes, you are right, bro. I don't fill the jerican to the top so as to leave a wide surface area at the top. And also leave the opening uncapped and covered with netting.
I just finished a job a few minutes ago raising the level of my tank by adding four plastic blocks at the feet of the iron stand.
Scooped the tank water out into a few buckets, do the changes, and then refilled the water and adding in a jericanful of fresh clean water.
Needs time to do it.
That's why fish-keeping is a commitment - it becomes a part of one's life. Just as keeping a dog requires one to make it a commitment.

I only need to clear the pee and poo and feed them, pat them, walk them.
Fishes and plants are totally different level, monitor the growth, adjust the scape, trim the plants, fight algae, fill the rack with tons of medication, fertilizers, become a chemist with many tiny test tubes for different water parameters, hardscape laying around in storeroom, drawers, cabinets, air tube and what other tubes, new equipment, adjust co2, adjust lighting, adjust fertilizers, monitor fishes, shrimps, counting them ever so regularly lol.... I rest my case...
As long as one is loving what what one is doing, it will not be a viewed as a chore. It becomes a pleasure as long as the interest remains.
It's true that caring for a dog does not require as much specialized technical expertise and knowledge as fish-keeping demands, since one can just bring it to a vet if required. But it still requires one to commit the time and effort and to treat it as a member of the family.

I did the same as what UA's suggested and moved a 16L tank from my office to another office. Keep partial of the tank water and top it up after the move with distilled water (just nice for a WC).
