Hi octopus, this is definitely an O-ring problem. I encountered the exact same problem on my eheim professional 2 last night and replacing the O-ring solved it instantly. Check if there are cracks around the canister.

No leak occursIMG_0379[1].JPG during normal operation. However when the filter is swithced off leakage occurs at a single point. Refer to attached picture. The problem appear indicative of a worn out square O-ring. Or is there other possibility?.

Yup,it is the O ring...How long have you used or not use the filter?

change the o ring quickly before the leak flood your house or spoil your cabinet...

O ring gets Harden over time...its time to change out..

Oring was replaced and no more leaking. But Outlet pressure very very weak. When left at ground level water can flow freely. But when I raise the outlet hose, water flows back into cannister. Previously even with the leak outlet pressure was good even when raised. Even with the filter on the water cannot flow back into tank and can only hear chattering sound. Finally gave up to seek advice from AQ. Please help

Don't understand your problem.. is the inlet or outlet too dirty and got choke or any filter media stuck somewhere?
did you put the trays back correctly? is the filter media too packed?
External canisters suppose to work well below tank level...
If there is a loud clattering sound - there is a good chance that your impeller is loose - probably detached from the magnet. Open up to confirm. Once you see it, you will have two options - get a replacement impeller for ~$20 or super glue the magnet to the impeller together as some people have reported doing!

Impeller checked still very much attached to the magnet. Will try without media and media basket to see if it makes any difference. Last option will be to replace the impeller though dont notice anything abnormal about the impeller. Can only carry out the above over the weekend and will update.

Problem resolved after the pail of water was moved to a higher ground. Initially the pail of water was placed on a 50cm height stool, when i encountered the poor return flow. This time the pail of water was placed on 90cm height table and cannister(media included) was powered up and it was all systems go. Looks like the vertical distance between the cannister and the pail has got something to do with it. Is there a minimum height requirement between tank and cannister filter for the system to work?

Yes. I also had that problem with another filter (though I can't remember what brand it was) bought from Seletar Nanyang Aquarium. Salesman said could be because of over-packing of your media but then still got a refund and bought an Eheim instead
. Maybe it's the same problem? But I think the main issue is because your "O" ring is faulty. Just go back to the shop and get a refund!

Alas the joy was only temporary. Yesterday when i was setting up the filter faced onced again with the water circulation problem. When it was initially started everything appeared normal. The filter drawing the intake and pumping out the water via the return pipe into the tank. But this circulation lasted less than 1 min and suddenly water stopped flowing out of the return pipe. Felt the filter and and it was vibrating (to conform no interrruption to power source). So decided to switch off and fiddled around. Powered it up again and it got the circulation going again but similarly stopped in less than a minute. Any idea of what could be the possible cause?. Incidentally just noted this abnormality. The red button which needed to be pressed in before disconnecting the hose adaptor appear to be stuck. See attached. Would this have contributed to the problem?. Where would it be a good place to get it repaired besides Qian Hu?.

As far as I know, only Qian Hu does after sales services like repairs and such.

Perhaps it could be because the outlet pipe was locked or the valve there was closed. Was there a siphon in the intake tube? Maybe you can send more pictures so that we can access the situation better? :-)
