why do you need the ring for?

To anchor my plants

Just push the plants into the substrate, those ceramic rings are used by plant farms during packaging as temporary weights, they are supposed to be removed when you add the plants to your aquarium.

A cheap alternative is to get a small packet of lava rocks, then just tie the plants to those rocks.
