This fish is not the easiest to care for and is not recommended for beginners. They require large aquariums and can be vulnerable to mycobacteriosis. When cared for well, these fish can live for a long period of time.

Very active swimmers so large open spaces are recommended and a well planted aquarium is highly desired by these fish. They are not very picky eaters and enjoy a mixture of vegetable foods and flakes but will have a high craving for insect larvae. The rainbow species has been known to have some major health issues when feeding on bloodworm so it is best to keep this to a minimum. Lake kutubu rainbows do well with a variety of different foods such as live foods, flakes and vegetables. They are also known to do well in well oxygenated clear water as well as low to high ranges of pH levels.

A rambunctious and active swimming fish although females are known to be slightly more reserved and keep to themselves. They are overall peaceful.

It is hard to distinguish males and females. It can be easier once the fish have aged a bit where males tend to be more obvious due to the shape of its body. Color is very similar between the males and females but males can sometimes be more dramatic in color. Females are known to be more low-key compared to males.

A large aquarium is recommended for breeding as males can be fierce and will pester females nonstop. Make sure to allow an equal number of species for breeding. It is known that breeding will usually take place early morning once a male and female have become involved. The female will release eggs at quite a distance above the gravel surface. It is best to separate the eggs from the male and females as it is known that they fill feed on the eggs. Raise the fry together and away from adults. Feed fry micro type food or wafers. It is also very important during the breeding process that females eat vegtable matter and often search for and eat algae.
